People have proposed putting a big
league baseball park, a Buddhist retreat, a
nudist colony, a M cM enam in’s or a re­
gional Head Start headquarters on the
form er Rosem ont School property. Many
people w ould like to see a Catholic high
school there.H ow ever, for now at least,
those in charge o f considering the fate o f
the 7.65 acre former Catholic girls school at
597 N. Dekum St. will concentrate on put­
ting housing there. The Rosem ont Plan­
ning C om m ittee, com posed o f neighbor­
hood and city representatives, received
two types o f public input last month: feed­
back from a February 4 workshop attended
by 47 people, and 14 formal proposals for
the re-developm ent o f the property by
groups and individuals. The latter in­
cluded one anonym ous, and presum ably
facetious, proposal to build a major league
baseball stadium on the Rosemont site
and nearby “drug zoned property.” If the
form er historic convent is used, the w riter
said, you could elim inate unruly behavior
“by rem inding the fans that this is sacred
g round.”
T here w ere also serious proposals for
private schools by Portland s W aldorf
School and M ilw aukie’s LaSalle High
School, and a regional headquarters for
the Head Start program At the w orkshop
there were proposals for a Buddhist retreat
(the subject o f a few inform al inquiries but
no formal proposal), a com m unity center
and a nudist camp. There w ere many calls
for turning the property into a Catholic
High School, prom pted by the urgings o f
P ied m o n t N eig h b o rh o o d A sso c ia tio n
president Tom M arkgraf and other propo­
nents. Baruti A rtharee o f the Portland De­
velopment Commission, a committee mem ­
ber, said he was “a little taken aback" by
people who said, “We w ere told to come
out to support a high school."
D espite this, A rtharee rem inded the
com m ittee, PDC purchased the property
last year for the express purpose o f creat­
ing housing there. " I f housing doesn’t
work out, we can put the property on the
market for a high school or anything else,
he said “ But for us to just put this prop­
erty to som e other use w ould be totally
inappropriate. W e'd have to go back to
C ity Council and reverse every decision
w e’ve m ade about this property in the last
year.”
M oreover, although La Salle did subm it
a formal proposal for the property, it also
attached a letter saying it was not yet
ready to com m it to establish a school there
o r a n y w h e re
in n o r th - n o r th e a s t

chance the city would create a new center

said the site 's residential zoning, and loca­
tion on local streets, would preclude any
m ajor com m ercial use. There could be a
small social service facility there, serving
a housing developm ent on the site or sur­
rounding neighborhood, but not the sort
o f regional headquarters H ead Start envi­
sioned.
