35 additional cities in the U nited
States, and for the first tim e in P ort­
land the entire L incoln C enter O r­
chestra w ill accom pany M arsalis.
N ot only does the concert celebrate
the 100,h anniversary o f ja z z legend
D uke E llington, but also it supports
potential artists by raising funds for
Y oung A udiences.
D uring the 1998-1999 season,
W ynton M arsalis and his Lincoln
C enter Jazz O rchestra w ill inaugu­
rate T he E llington C entennial w ith
their A m erica in R hythm and Tune
concert. The Ellington C entennial is
a yearlong acknow ledm ent o f D uke
E llington’s contributions to jazz m u­
sic. E d w a rd K e n n e d y “ D u k e ”
E llington is considered by m any to
be A m eric a's g reatest com poser.

em bark on six m onths o f national
and international touring featuring
all Ellington program s, working with
m ajorperform ing artts organizations
across the w orld. Ellington w ould
have been 100 years old on April 29,
1999, and Jazz at Lincoln Center aims
to be the cen ter o f the international
celebration o f this great artist.
W ynton M arsalis, the first jazz
artist to be aw arded the Pulitzer Prize
in m usic, is considered the m ost ac­
com plished and acclaim ed jazz artist
and com poser o f his and a d istin ­
guished classical m usician as well.
A recipient o f eight Grammy Awards.
M arsalis serves as a m entor to fu­
ture generations o f m usicians, shar­
ing his soul on a series o f recording
and through his vision as A ristic
