Clinton Talks of a “New Season”
New Carissa

On February 4, the 639-foot
cargo ship, “New Carissa” slipped
its moorings in a storm and ran
aground north of Coos Bay. Offi­
cials decided to burn the ship rather
than risk spilling 400,000 gallons of
diesel and fuel oil into the sea. As
a result of explosives activity, the
“New Carissa” split in two. Plans
are underway to tow the cargo
ship to international waters for
burial. Crews were attempting re­
cently to burn off the ship's re­
maining fuel oil where an esti­
mated 50,000 gallons remained.
American Airlines
American Airline pilots have re­
turned to work and will follow
nearly all of the regularly sched­
uled flights. Judge Joe Kendall of
Federal District Court in Texas
issued a ruling that held the pilots
union in contempt and ordered it to
deposit $ 10 million with the court.
About 2,400 pilots called in sick as
a “strike” move that caused major
flight cancellations.

ated during his quick trip to M erida, M exico.
B ut his brim m ing confidence this tim e sug­
gested he feels h e ’s w on n o t only a second
chance but a stronger hand. C linton took o ff
w ork today and, after a long abstinence, took to

C linton’s motorcade with flags and banners wish­
ing him and “su esposa (your w ife) Hillary”
happy returns.
“This jo y , this warmth, this affection is re­
served only for o ur dearest friends,” Zedillo said.
C linton basked in that affection.
He thanked the congressional delegation with
him — including RepubbeanReps. Mark Sanford
o f South Carolina, Rob Portman o f O hio and
K evin B rady o f Texas, each o f w hom voted in
favorofC linton’s im peachment— fortheirshow
o f “A m erica’s com m itm ent for the com m on fu­
ture w e will m ake together.”
T o officials from both M exico and the United
States, C linton proclaimed: “This tide o f spring
has brought a new season o f friendship.”
He w as talking about U .S.-M exicanrelations,
bu t the sentiment appeared to apply m ore broadly.
O n the return flight to W ashington late M on­
day, C linton lingered with m em bers ofC ongress
in the guest cabin. W hile the president signed
pages o f A ir Force O ne stationery for one guest,
others showed o ff to Clinton the T-shirts and
other M exican souvenirs they’d picked up.
Stewards passed out Hemp Golden beer, whose
label boasted the "sm ooth, mild, m ellow herbal
flavor” ofhaving been brew ed w ith hem p seeds.
In a comfortable exchange M onday w ith the
sam e reporters he dodged for m ost o f last year,
C linton m used from his seat at the lavish
H acien d a T em ozon (W hirlw ind E state) about
his w ife ’s political future and his ow n.
“ S he and I both w ould like to co ntinue to be
useful in public affairs w hen w e leave o ffice,”
he said in between private m eetings w ith Zedillo.

Mexico’s President Ernesto Zedillo
for a 23-hour visit where they dis­
cussed plans to form a partnership
in a $500 million anti - drug effort.
Clinton’s proposed initiative in­
volves buying radar planes, am­
phibious boats, and other equip­
ment to interdict drug traffickers.
Deploying a new national police
force is also called for. The Mexi­
can narcotics industry smuggles
an estimated $15 billion worth of
drugs into the United States each
year.

Violent Crime Victims
A recent study released by the
Justice Departm ent found that
American Indians are the victims
of violent crimes at more than
twice the national average. Indi­
ans were far more likely to be
victims of violent crimes than mem­
bers of any other racial group. A
full 60 percent of the perpetrators
of violent crimes against Indians
were whites. Alcohol played a
major part in most of these violent
crimes against Indians.

three films vying for “best picture”
are “Saving Private Ryan”, “The
Thin Red Line” and “Life Is Beau­
tiful.” The theme common to all
three movies is World War II.
Saving The Tower
Cao Shizhong, a 68-year old ar­
chitectural engineer is going to
take on the challenge of fixing the
slant on the Leaning Tower of
Pisa. The Pisa began slanting
since its first stone was laid in
1173. Each year , it tilts at a rate
o f 2 millimeters. Cao Shizhong
says he can do the job of straight­
ening the historic site in 10 months.
His methods remain a guarded
secret.

Mann began her career in the early
1 9 7 0 's w ith works on econom ic,
po litics and revolution. Her first
b o ok, “ Local M erchants and the
C hinese Bureauracy, 1750 to 1950,”
appeared in 1987. That same year,
the prestigious Journal o f Asian Stud­
ies published M ann’s article, “ W in­
dows in the Kinship, C lass and C om ­
m unity Structure o f Qing D ynasty
C h in a,” heralding her grow ing in ter­
est in the history o f Chinese women
and gender.
For the past decade, Mann has
been one o f the leading experts in
the h is to r ic a l stu d y o f C h in e se
w om en.
“ Dr. Mann has opened our eyes to
the rich n ess o f C hinese w om en’s
lives and inspires dozens o f young
historians to follow in her footsteps,”
said Susan G losser, assistant pro ­
fessor o f history at Lewis & Clark
College. “ She is an anim ated speaker
with a knack for bringing the past
alive.”
