P riortohis m o th er’s rem arriage, church atten­ dance w as ju st an occasional ele­ m ent o f young D arw in ’s relation­ ship w ith his grandmother. B ut along w ith the changing dynam ics o f his fam ily, D arw in and his five older brothers and sisters w ere required to do som ething new -regularly at­ tend their stepfather’ ’ chosen place o f w o rs h ip , E l-B e th e l B a p tist C hurch. It w as there D arw in joined the ch ild ren ’s choir and discovered his m usical gift. “I o pened m y m outh and I could sing,” D arw in says sim ply. In fact, he sang so w ell that he w as pulled from the children’s choir, de­ spite his age, and placed into the ch u rc h ’s young adult choir. T raci, D arw in ’s w ife o f six years and best friend for the past 20, jokes, ‘ ‘H e thought he w as a big shot because he got to sing w ith choir m em bers, w ho w ere m uch older th an he w as.” A fter those early days at E l-B ethel, D arw in continued to im pact listeners w ith the unique strength o f his voice, perform ing in school ensem bles, vari­ ous C incinnati com m unity choirs and several vocal groups. H e also began to pursue vocal training, studying classi­ cal m usic a r d w orking alongside other local gospel artists. D arw in ’s older sister, Pam , intro­ duced him to a personal relationship w ith the Lord w hen he w as 14 years old. E xcited by the new direction in his spiritual life, and challenged to know m ore about G od, he left his fam ily’s church and jo in e d C hrist E m m anuel C hristian Fellow ship in C incinnati a few years later. Traci followed him in his spiritual pursuit and jo in ed the church as w ell. A fter 5 years attending church together, their friendship blossom ed into a rom ance and they w ere m arried. D arw in continued to pursue his m usic m inistry from his hom etow n until an experience at a C eC e W m ans concert, in the Fall o f 1995, changed the direc­ tion o fh is life. “ D uring that tim e in m y life, I w as sort o f in a holding pattern, w aiting for the tim ing o f G o d w ith re­ gard to m y m usic,’’ he explains. “ I knew I d id n 't w ant this ordinary, shallow m inistry. P rio rto C eC e’s con cert I had n ever experienced the glory o f G od m ixed w ith such creativity and skill.” W hen the concert ended, D arw in began talking to R oger R yan, W mans ’ m usic director. A strong friendship re­ sulted. Soon after, D arw in and his w ife began to feel the pull o f the H oly spirit to relocated to N ashville, T N - a g ro w ­ ing hotbed o f C hristian m usic innova­ tion, and the city m any o f to d ay ’s m ost prom inent gospel m usicians and art- istscallhom e. W ithin w eeks o f relocat­ ing in S eptem ber 1996, opportunities began to arise for him to use his gift in studio sessions and on to u r w ith sev­ eral w ell-know n national artists and m usicians. D arw in ’s reputation as an acco m ­ plished singer drew the attention o f several o fth e in d u stry 's m ost success­ ful producers and songw riters. It also drew their w illing participation w'hen the tim e arrived for D arw in to com plete his first solo project.
