Freedom From Fat
T his is a class for people who
are hungry all the tim e and have
tried num erous diets to no avail.
The Freedom From Fat w eight
m anagem ent program offers the
latest inform ation on m enopause,
diabetes, heart disease and os­
teoporosis as it relates to healthy
w eight loss. Classes are taught by
a SW W ashington M edical C enter
dietitian, a behavioral specialist
and a certified fitness instructor.
The focus o f the class is on posi­
tive lifestyle changes and im prov­
ing eating patterns. Participants
receive a textbook, nutritional and
city residents.

trict Attorneys and 1 feel like I am
living in a police state. I feel power­
less," said Alex C. Stroup whose 21-
year-old son plea-bargained and is
awaiting sentencing. We had no
choice but to plea-bargain said
Stroup. "Measure 11 is basically a
black mail. Three to seven months
sounds a lot better that 14 years.”

said, the law lacks flexibility and discre­
tion for some of the cnmes it covers.
“As much as it locks up violent
criminal for what they do, it is also
locking up the not so serious of­
fenders," said Schrunk. “Some o f it
is appropriate and some o f it isn t
but 1 don’tbelieve it should be repealed
because it locks up some serious vio­
lent offenders,” he said. “I think it can
be replaced with something specific.”

District Attorney’s office indicates
that since the measure went into
effect a little over 2,000 individuals
are serving mandatory minimum
sentences o f not less than five years
and 10 months, the minimum sen­
tencing, to 25 years. Over 66 per­
cent o f those sentenced under Mea­
sure 11 are first time offenders and
35 percent under the age o f 21.
According to Department o f Ad­
ministrative Services, it is estimated
that Measure 11 will add 8.825 of­
fenders to Oregon’s prison system
between 1996 and July o f 2005.
