Martin lifts Volunteers to national title

ebrated T ennessee’s first national

Martin, who spent the previous
two seasons in the shadow o f top
NFL draft pick Peyton M anning, had
touchdown passes o f 79 yards to
Peerless Price and 4 yards to Shawn
Bryson to cap the V olunteers’ per­
fect season with a 23-16 Flesta Bowl
win M onday night.
“We had to prove to everybody
w ew eretheN o. 1 team in the nation,”
said Martin, whose V ols w ere under­
dogs in the game despite being unde­
feated and top-ranked. “W e had a
chip on our shoulders. W e w on all
our games. And we still d idn’ t get our
respect.”
The Volunteers, 13-0 for the first
time in school history, received all 70
first-place votes in the final A ssoci­
ated Press media poll. O hio State was
second, followed by Florida State.
U nder the new Bowl Cham pion­
ship Series format, Tennessee was
crow ned national cham pion in the
USA Today/ESPN coaches’ poll im­
m ediately after the game.
Tennessee coach Philip Fulmer,
long a proponent o f a playoff, ben­
efited from the first BCS cham pion­
ship. “This is the best system anyone

want to be in the mix o f people known
as the best football teams in the coun­
