Luther Coleman

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 19,1998 at Rose City
Cemetery & F uneral Home.
Mr. Luther Colem an was bom on August 16,1923 in Shongaloo,
Louisiana to the union o f Gussie Cooper Colem an and Luther Coleman, Sr.
Mr. Coleman, w as blessed with two sons, Alex and Luther, Jr. He later
m et and married Bessie M. Brown in April o f 1952. This union was blessed
with tw o children, Gerald and Marcello.
H e moved to Portland in 1951 where he w orked at the shipyards and later
worked tor many years for Bromley Masonry until retinng in 1987. Luther
w as active and he enjoyed fishing, traveling and people.
H e leaves to cherish his memory: his wife: Bessie; son Gerald o f
Beaverton, Oregon; daughter Marcello o f Portland, Oregon, son; Alex o f
Houston, Texas; son: L uther, Jr. o f Las Vegas, Nevada; sister, Jessie Warren
and brother Ocie Coleman o f Minden, Louisiana, 13 grandchildren,
numerous great grandchildren and a host o f other relatives and friends.

W alter was in the A rm y and then a com puter programmer.
H e passed aw ay in O akland, California, were he had lived for one year.

Came Lue Thompson was h m on June 12, 1940 in Tuskegee, Alabama to the

parents o f Johnnie and Lizzie Smith.
Cam e was the fust child o f four. She attended Washington Public School in
Alabama, an all black school with her three brothers. Louis. Charles and Stephen.
She later moved to Portland in June, 1953, where she joined the Vancouver Ave.
First Baptist Church, under the pastorship o f the late Dr. O.B. Williams.
After graduating from high school she did child care, and later married Ross
Thompson. Most o f C am e’s life was devoted to child care for foster kids and being
a homemaker and loving mother to her five children.
Came was very active in the church She was a youth usher, sang in the Jr. Choir,
the William-ehoralers and was a mem ber o f the B.T.U.
She leaves to cherrish her memories: Her five children, Venetia I . Smith. Lindell
Betts, Jr., Elizabeth 1.. Betts, Johnie L. Bradford, and Delicia E.W. Thompson; her
mother, Lizzie M. Smith: three brothers. Louis Sm ith Charles E. Sm ith and
Stephen L. Smith; fifteen grandchildren: five great-grandchildren; and a host o f aunts,
uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and her beloved dogs, Pierce, Oscar and Sissy.

Gantenbein Avenue in Portland, Oregon.
Interment will be private at Sunnyside Chimes Memorial Garde- is in Portland, Oregon.
Jessie Mae Whetstone was bom on May 19,1918 in Queen City, Texas to Eugene Braxton and Addine Butts Braxton. She passed
away in a Gresliam. Oregon conv. hospital on December 22.1998 at the age o f 80 years.
Jessie married tier late husband Horace Whetstone after she finished school In 1943, they moved to Portland where she worked
for the shipyards for several years. Her husband preceded her in death in 1958.
Jessie was a member o f New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon. The Pastor is Rev Robert C Jointer. She was
active in the church choir and other areas o f the chinch
Jessie leaves to cherish her memory: Sister Rose Maty Johnekm. Portland. Oregon Brother Willie James Braxton, Queen City,
Texas, Brother John Webster Austin, Texas. There were no children. Preceded in death by a Brother, Jimmy Hurt. Also survived by a
host o f nieces and nephews and friends.

Mis. Thompson passed away on December 25,1998 in Portland at the age o f 91.
Mis. Thompson was bom on December 7,1907 in Baton Rouge. Louisiana to William and Alice (Lqenne) Watkins. She
married James Thompson in 1925. They moved to Portland in 1947.
She was a member o f Hughes M anorial Methodist Episcopal Church She was preceded in death by h a husband James in 1996
She ts survived by her daughters Addie Haynes ofPortland and Shirley Thompson o f Oakland, CA.; sens, James Thompson Jr., o f
Portland and Garland Thompson ofN ew York, N.Y.; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
