Bess Kaiser To Be adidas
National Headquarters
C ontinued F rom F ron t
“W e’ve worked hard to keep a tar
get on the number o f jobs in north and
northeast Portland, and we know we
have to work harder. This area hasn’t
always benefitted from the good times
the rest o f the city has enjoyed.”
“This is the most significant devel
opment proposal the city has seen in 10
years,” Sten said.adidas Portland busi
ness unit manager Ray Leary added,
“ It’s a tremendous vote o f confidence
that adidas would make north and
notheast Portland their national head
quarters. It shows that businesses in
northeast Portland can succeed.”
Overlook Neighborhood Associa
tion chair Bob Peterson said the deci
sion “will be great for the neighbor
hood, and the whole city will benefit.”
Peterson added that the process for
selecting a new use forthe hospital was
a tribute to Kaiser Permanente and the
developer they chose, James Winkier,
after their decision to remove their own
operations. “The neighborhood was
“They didn’t look at this as just the
resale o f a surplus asset or recycling
writ large,” he said. "This is a model o f
w hat u rban d ev elo p m en t should
be.... I’m inspired by K aiser’s example,
and honored to carry the torch to the
finish.”
Ironically, Winkier is now working
on a project to develop a new factory
outlet store on Northeast Martin Luther
King Jr. Boulevard at Russell Street for
adidas rival Nike. He also built 42 row
houses subdivision on adjacent land
east o f the Nike site. Last week, with 39
o f the houses sold, he turned the prop
erty over to the new owners.
The praise heaped on Kaiser last
week was a far cry from the public
reaction in 1995. Its decision to close
the hospital was attacked as a betrayal
o f the co m m u n ity and its o w n
em ployees. In contrast, last w eek
Wynne said o f Kaiser, “From the time
it came here to the time it left it was a
model corporatecitizen. It’sastandard
we aspire to.”
involved every step o f the way,” he
said. “It was an example o f how the
process should work.”
In the process o f rezoning the prop
erty for institutional (IR) to neighbor-
hoodoffice (CO2) use last year, the city
at Kaiser and the neighborhood’s re
quest added a design overlay that will
requireapublic review o f adidas’ plans.
Former Overlook chair Sandi Hansen
added, “Kaiser asked us, ‘W hat should
replace the hospital'.’’ We told them,
and they listened. Our concerns had to
be addressed (by potential users) be
cause they were in the RFP (request for
proposals). 1 can’t tell you how unusual
that is.”
As for Winkler she said, “I can’t
adopt him and I can’t marry him. I wish
I could.”
Wynne credited W inkler’s "dili
gence” foradidas’s decision. At first,
“The idea o f relocating to a former
hospital w as...interesting,” W ynne
quipped.
W inkler in turn credited Kaiser.
