Hombuckle has been called “the most
beautiful and powerful blues/Gos-

her a confident, world class bearing
and her presence is legendary - she is
able to electrify an audience. From
her roots as a church singer (begin

costal Church) and soloist, Linda
Hombuckle has performed at many

awards, she has recently released a
new CD Linda Hombuckle - playing
on radio stations across the country.
Hombuckle is recognized as the Soul/
Blues Diva o f the West Coast - “ Its a
real experience to hear someone sing
who can perform vocal gymnastics
o f the sort Hombuckle employs.
What Linda Hombuckle does with
her voice other singers can only
dream about. She is destined for
stardom.” said Andy Grigg in Real
Blues Magazine. Karen Whitman,
M anager o f Pioneer Courthouse
Square explained the success of the
Gospel Concert on Pioneer Court
house Square: “At this time o f the
year, alm ost everyone seeks a spiri
tual experience at some level, and
some form. The Square is our city’s
celebration place, and we want to

“ Establishing Strategies,” and “ im

speaker at one session is John
Christenson, a financial planning
consultant from W ilsonville, Ore.,
who specializes in serving the Chris
tian com m unity.
G leason said the course is based
on thebiblical adm onition in I Peter
5:10 (N ew A m erican Standard ver
s io n ) “ to p e r f e c t, c o n firm ,
strenghten and establish” pastors,
key church leaders and adm inis
trators. It seeks to equip them with
an understanding o f business and
the tools for strategic m anagem ent
and to prepare them for change
and innovation.
“T he church is transform ing,”
said Gleason. “The church is b e
ing challenged. T he church is
changing in the w ay it worships,
grow s, m inisters and educates.
L ike it or not, pastors, church
leaders and adm inistrators either
are-or will be-part o f that change.”
He said the course will look
closely at the need for pastors and
church leaders to understand “That
they m ust provide their mem bers
w ith program s, m aterials and ser
vices that they value. And in order
to do this, they m ust develop pro
ficiency in balancing the constraints
o f their denom inational requisites,
their individual church’s m ission,
and its m anagem ent, planning, or-
ganization and control needs.”
G leason said the course grew
out o f discussion he once had with
the late Ed Stevens, then George
Fox president, and later w ith sem i
nary D ean Tom Johnson, w ho
served a year as the university’s
interim president. All agreed that a
course on applying business m an
agem ent skills to the work o f the
church could prove valuable for
m any.
“ I’m not m aking the case that a
church should be run like a busi
ness,” said Gleason. “A church
and a business are not synony
m ous. But there are m any pro
cesses and m any o f the sam e con
cerns that business and churches
have.”
