A Christmas Carol

W hen P ortland C enter Stage
opens its new production o f A
Christmas Carol this holiday sea­
son, featured on-stage will be sev­
eral o f P ortland’s m ost talented
young musicians, singers and ac­
tors. The cast includes five stu­
dents, ranging in age from nine to
fifteen. D ustin T rag eth o n , a fourth
grader at Sunnyside Elem entary
School, plays Tiny Tim, the young
and hopeful Cratchit family child
whose “God bless us, every one!” is
perhaps the most memorable line o f
the Charles Dickens novel la. Dustin
has appeared in local productions
including Ramona Quimby at O r­
egon Children’s Theater, and “Night
o f 100 Stars,” and has performed
with Portland Symphonic Choir and
O rego n S y m p h o n y . T im o th y
Patrick W alsh, a fifth-grader and
accomplished musician, has won
awards in the Oregon Music Teach­
ers A ssociation’s Baroque (1998)
and Classical (1997 and 1998) Festi­

com m unity history and inspired
the artist to record her life through
them.
Pioneer women reflected their
landscapes and homes in quilted
artistry'. During rugged and diffi­
cult living conditions, the quilts of­
ten gave the quilters a meditative
space, pride o f accomplishment,
and pleasure in creating objects of
beauty.
Experiencing the play Quilters
provides insight into the “pieces o f
w om en’s lives” through song, sto­
ries and d an c e.... It is a celebration
o f w om en’s lives.
What: Q u ilters, a musical by
vals and Trula Whelan Piano Con­
certo Competition (1997 and 1998).
Timothy, who has appeared as a
guest soloist with the Marylhurst
Symphony; sings as part o f the
Christmas Carol ensemble. He won
his most recent piano competition
on a dinner break from his PCS re­
hearsal. C ody Hill, a student at Lin­
coln H igh School whose many com ­
munity credits include The Lion, the
witch and the W ardrobe; Willie
Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
and Ramona Quimby at Oregon
C h ild re n ’s theater, plays Teen
Scrooge and Peter in the production.
Lily Lowell, a fourth-grader at
Buckman Arts Elementary School,
who last appeared at Portland Center
Stage as M acduff s son in Macbeth,
plays Fan and a Cratchit Child in A
Christmas Carol. Lily has appeared in
Tygres Shakespeare Company’s As
You Like It and with Zig Zag trapeze
troupe. Blake Lowell, a seventh-
grader at Da vinci Arts Middle School
