Clive Charles: Meister Coach o f
University o f Portland
Bv
Y ema M easho
Until a couple o f weeks ago, the
w om en’s soccer team o f the Uni
versity o f Portland was rolling to
wards the Final Four o f the NCAA
Tournament before it lost to the
UniversityofCarolina. Since 1994,
missing the ’97 season, the team
has enjoyed a tremendous success
for four consecutive postseasons
by going to the Final Four o f the
N CA A T oumament.
The men ’ s team has m ade seven
NCAA appearances in the last eight
years going to the semifinals in
1988 and’95. Together the men
and w om en’s teams have earned
nine conference championships and
earned 11 NCAA playoflfberths in
a combined 17 seasons. In 1995,
the school managed to get both
teams in the finals.
The man behind these team s’
success is C liv e C h a rle s, the
school’s director o f soccer and
head coach for both m en and
women soccer teams.
A former professional player for
West HamUnited in England and
the Portland Timbers o f the North
American Soccer League, Charles
began his coaching career for the
m en’s team at the University o f
Portland in 1986. In 1990, he took
over the w om en’s program and
becam e the director o f soccer,
coaching both teams. Since then,
Charles has brought respect and
success for both teams. He has
helped develop the w om en’s team
from its infancy to what it has
become today. Charles brought to
the school not only his experience
and love for the game but also
recognition and success for the
college.
“I don’t think we can measure
w hat C live has brought to the
school,” said Ixiren Wohlgemuth,
the schools sports information Di
rector. “W e have limited resource
