What is Education, What Is
Technology? IV
B> P rof . M c K inley B urt
As w e w ind up this series on ques
tions that w e su g g ested m ay be
“m oot” ; my current interface w ith a
limited, but vitally im portant group o f
parents, teachers and students is in
no m anner suspended.
W e concluded our observations
with the added query, “ is the entire
next century to be like this? That is
would it be a world busy at defining
itselfaccordingtoH um ptyD um pty’s
arrogant pronouncem ent; “Things
are w hat I say they are.”
A nd those “ soccer m om s” w ho
have becom e energetic “Technology
m om s” have m ade it quite clear to me
that they have som e im m ediate and
com pelling technology’ needs o f
their own. Like specific inform ation
and resources for building and sup
porting their novel, but significant,
infrastructure w hich requires sites,
transforation, m aterials, equipm ent,
and people (got to get those role
m odels to our kids).
Did w e leave out money? T ve made
a dozen citation o f the “G uide To
O regon Foundations: Sixth edition,”
1995. Published by U nited W ay o f
the C olum bia W illam ette, Inform a
tion & Referral, 619 S outhw est 11 th
Avenue, Suite 300, Portland O regon
97205-2646 (503) 226-9360. Price is
$30.00, postpaid but call first for any
changes.
Like thousands o f others, I have
found this m ost useful publication to
be a great aid in seeking m onies for
w orthw hile projects. “The G uide to
O regon Foundation grant-m aking in
Oregon. The m ost obvious aspect o f
this goal focuses on helping the grant
seeker. W e hope to dem ystify the
grant-making process and make grant
research easier and m ore effective.”
A nd this book does an excellent
job, indeed. Just a review o f the nine-
page ‘introduction’ will focus you on
the structural and adm inistrative for
m at o f your organization - contem
plated, in process, or around for a
while. Your intentions are something
else entirely, but here are the guides
that force you to exam ine the nuts
and bolts o f your delivery system.
Like I say, you will find yourself
firm ly focused, and soon realizing
w hat a useful form at this is w hether
you are seeking a grant or ju st devel
oping your organization. O ne is led
through “ Fundraising, foundations
and their types, researching them,
w riting the proposal-form at, plan
ning, legal requirem ents, and much,
m uch more. Several parents have told
m e that an entirely new w orld has
opened before their eyes.”
In addition I have placed several
highly-m otivated people in touch
with form er PSU students o f m ine
w ho are executives w ith com panies
in the A ssociation o f O regon Indus
tries. Like a lot o f us, they also m ay
have difficulty in providing absolute
definitions o f education or technol
ogy. But, obviously, they know which
buttons to push - and have com e
through before this.
There is not m uch m ore to say in
this series except that "the villag e’ is
alw ays under siege, and vigilance is
the w atch w ord” . H ow ever, tw o o f
the technology groups say that “ if
you really w ant to get your youths
ahead o f the gam e in science get them
the follow ing books - really pen up
the mind.
