(L-R) John Starks, Patrick Ewing & Billy Hunter were on hand to discuss with press about present labor
talks
■ Despite the different spin from
different people, it was clear that the
sides were moving away from con
frontation and toward compromise.
O n the m ost productive day o f nego
tiations in the N B A lockout, owners
backed o ff their insistence on having a
hard salary cap.
Players and ow ners m et forabout nine
hours M onday on D ay 118 o f the lock
out, and finally started talking in detail
about a compromise.
“W e need a system that eventually
gets to where there’s a set percentage for
the players and a set percentage for the
ow ners,” deputy com m issioner Russ
Granik said. “I d o n ’t think it has to be a
hard cap, and in fact som e o f the things
w e ’re talking about now are not hard
caps.”
T he ow ners’ shift in position w as
dow nplayed by the union, but it m eant
the sides have to be closer, at least in
principle, on com ing to an agreem ent on
the m ain economic issues.
Talks resum ed today with the sides
discussing non-econom ic issues. O n
W ednesday, a negotiating session will
cover m any ofthe topics discussed M on
day.
“The best thing is w e have som e sort
o f an agreem ent on basic principles,"
said Orlando center Danny Schayes, a
m em ber o f the union’s executive com
mittee.
“Right now, w e’re talking about a
hybrid system. The first couple o f years
itwouldw orkone way, foranother couple
ofyears it w ould w ork another w ay if the
first w ay didn’t work. A t least w e’re
finding some com m on ground,’ ’ Schayes
said.
