D enver's sixth straight victory. With
the Broncos nursing a 14-10 lead early
in the fourth quarter. Davis plunged in
from 2 yards out. The touchdown was
D avis’ 44th as a Bronco, breaking
Floyd Little’s club record.
It was the third career 200-yard
gam e for Davis, who rushed for a
career-high 215 yards against Cincin-
nati on Sept. 21, 1997.
Seattle drew within 21-16 and was
driving for the go-ahead score late in
the fourth quarter when linebacker
G lenn Cadrez picked o ff an errant
John Friesz pass at the Denver 27.
After 2 runs netted Davis 7 yards, he
broke around left end and rum bled 70
yards to the Seattle 5, all but ending the
contest.
The Broncos have won 10 o f the
last 12 meetmgs with the Seahawks (3-
3), who have dropped three straight
after opening the season with three
wins.
After a couple o f em pty posses
sions, Denver seized a 14-0 advan
tage. Darrien Gordon returned a punt
by JeffFeagles 36 yards to the Seattle
19 and on the first play from scrim
mage, Elway found tight end Shannon
Sharpe fora 14-0 lead with 2:07 left in
the quarter.
But Seattle didn’ t fold. A fter a drive
stalled and a punt pinned D enver deep
in its own territory, linebacker Darrin

Y ankee Stadium rocked long and
hard T uesday night, as N ew York
reached the W orld Series for a record
35th tim e by beating the C leveland
Indians 9-5 to w in the AL cham pion
ship series in six games.
It w as a little strange, and a little
sloppy.
Scott B rosius seem ed to finish
C leveland o ff w ith a three-run hom er
for a 6-0 lead in the third inning. But
D avid C one nearly gave it all back,
allow ing a grand slam to Jim Thom e
that pulled the Indians w ithin a run.
Derek Jeter then restored the safety
m argin w ith a tw o-run triple in the
sixth, a drive to right that M anny
Ram irez tried to snag w ith a leap at
the top o f the w all - only the ball
landed on a hop at his feet.

first W orld Series since 1948, failed
to force a seventh gam e because it
allow ed five unearned runs.
O ther gam e highlights: another
controversial um piring call, a line
drive that hit an um pire on the back
side and a pum ped-up crow d that
took every opportunity to m ake up
for the taunts D avid W ells endured
in C leveland last week.
A fter going 114-48 during the
regular season and sw eeping T exas
in the first round, the Y ankees felt
pressure to reach the Series, w hich
they w on in 1996.
C leveland felt pressure, too, after
losing G am e 7 o f the W orld Series to
Florida last O ctober. But after fall

behind strong pitching from O rlando

consecutive one-out singles in the

N ew Y ork m ade it 3-0 in the sec

G iles. Joe G irardi singled with one
out. C huck K noblauch doubled into
the left-field co m er and Giles, after
picking up the ball, let it fall out ofhis
glove.
Cone took a shutout into the fifth.
A fter singles by W ilson and Kenny
Lofton put runners on first and third,
Vizquel hit a liner up the m iddle that
hit H endry in the rear end. Lofton

and a w alk to Justice forced in a run.
A fter fanning Ram irez, Cone gave
up the grand slam to Thom e, who set
an A L cham pionship series record
w ith his fourth homer.
Ramiro M endoza cam e in to start
the sixth and allow ed a hit in three
shutout innings. M ariano Rivera fin

Up Atlanta’s Fans
The fans o f A tlanta are excited
about the playoffs — finally.
No m ajor-league team has ever
w on a best-of-7 series after losing
the first three gam es. In fact, A tlanta
is the first team even to force a sixth
game.
Tom G lavine, w ho took the loss in
G am e 2 , is sc h e d u le d to p itc h
W ednesday w ith the B raves in an
other m ust-w in situation.
“They w anted to w rap it up ( in San
D iego) and w e w anted to prolong
things to get back to A tlanta and that
is w hat w e did,” G lavine said. “But
they are still one w in aw ay from
clinching and we have to win both
gam es.”
“I feel great, w ell rested," he said.
“ I’m looking forw ard to it. For being
dow n 0-3, 1 was ju st hoping to get
another start. So I’m happy we were
able to com e back and still have a
chance.”
A fter w inning the last two games
in San Diego, the Braves feel like the
momentum is in their favor.
“W e’re taking ltback to Atlanta,” said
Michael Tucker, the Game 5 hero. “And
everything is pretty much going ourway.
If we keep the pressure on, keep things
going, w e’ 11 be pretty successful with it"
down.
Friesz found Pritchard for 13 yards
and Joey Galloway for 14. On 2nd-
and-15 from midfield, Friesz com
pleted a 13-yard pass to Christian
Fauna. Watters then carried for 8 yards
to the Denver 29. But a run by Watters
netted nothing and a reverse to Gallo
way gained just one. On 3rd-and-9
from the 28 Denver blitzed and Friesz
did not see Cadrez, w ho m ade the easy
interception to end the threat. Seattle
committed 12 penalties for 93 yards.
“ I don’t know why w e’re not doing
what we did last year,” Friesz said.
“W e w ere a very potent offense last
year and w e’re not playing up to it.
There’s somebody all the time, some
times doing something wrong.”

A listair Johnston, head o f IM G ’s

W oods has severed his relationship

more than $60 million. Since then,
N orton has put together deals —
American Express and Rolex, among
them — worth about $90 million.
“The decision came dow n to a fun
damental difference,” Earl Woods told
Sports Illustrated. “ For Hughes, the
dollar is almighty. For Tiger, money is
not that important. And Hughes un
derestimated T iger’s personal growth
and his grasp o fh is own business.”
