“T here’s not only food for the
body, but food for the soul here.
And I’m not a religious person per
sonally,” says G onzalez over lunch
at St. Francis Cafe.
D iners break bread am id statues

collection o f religious artw ork and
spiritual m usic. But th a t’s not all
that sets this restaurant apart.
There is no bill.

for a donation.

liave been i n business for 20 months,
som etim es accepting a few coins -
or less - for their hom em ade soups,
salads and sandw iches and full din
ners. It’s been, they say, a struggle.
“ I’ve seen m iracles here - ju st the
fact that w e're open," says Sizemore.
“ Every tim e w e get to the bottom o f
the barrel, som ething has happened."
Now developers plan a multiscreen
theater on the site in Ybor City, a
trendy area o f nightclubs that bor
ders one o f the city ’s poorest neigh
borhoods. The cafe must close in
September.
The couple have put their life sav
ings into the cafe and their trust in
God. They hope to relocate to a site
nearby.
“ 1 thought it was going to be a
cafe-slash-m inistry, but it turned out
to be a ministry-slash-cafe,” Sizemore
says.

Sizem ore has no prior experience
with restaurants. “ 1 was hoodwinked
and shanghaied,” the 43-year-old says
with a laugh.
Mrs. Sizem ore, 41, abandoned
nursing to w ork as the chef. W hile he
talks, she peels potatoes in the tiny
kitchen.
T he menu changes as the spirit
m oves them: soups "prayerfully pre
pared" and hearty salads, including
“render unto Caesar, C aesar salad”
and the “Greek Orthodox salad.” And
consider the “converts” : Any salad
can becom e a sandwich on pita.
Sandw iches are fat; desserts in
dulging, hom em ade cheese cake and
baklava. Dinners vary daily from coq
au vin; poached salmon in a wine,
b u tter and lem on sauce; perhaps
shrim p with Portobello mushroom s
and peppers over pasta.
Success, says Sizemore, com es on
tw o levels. “On a spiritual level, we
have received many blessings and
been able to help people. Financially,
w e have failed m iserably.”

In addition to P astor Nelson, local m inisters will speak as
well. Also, there w ill be a barbecue on Saturday 22nd as well as
perform ances by local choirs and yo uth recording groups.

day, one man cam e back to pay,
saying he felt guilty.
T he restaurant also feeds the
needy, regardless o f their ability to
pay. A fter lunch on certain days, the
hom eless and penniless are w el
comed.
Business at the 70-seat eatery is
mostly by w ord o f mouth. M any
custom ers are regulars. They talk of
gourm et fare, friendly proprietors,
soothing atmosphere.
“This isn ’t like a restaurant, i t ’s
like a church,” says superm arket
clerk Jason Brown.
“ I love this place,” says Gonzalez,
host o f a nationally syndicated radio
talk show. “I ’m uplifted every tim e
1 com e in. I ’ve brought people here
from all over, and everybody leaves
feeling rich.”

George preceded him in death. Leamon has twenty-three grandchildren, four great
