SWAT marksmen stand ready on
nearby rooftops, their high-powered
w eapons targeted on Danny Roman
(Samuel L. Jackson), who is holding
thechiefofthe L. A.D. and his staffat
gunpoint.
Roman's desperate gambit has
been triggered by an equally desper
ate situation: his world has been de
stroyed by false charges of murder
and embezzlement brought against
him. Roman knows that people lis
ten when lives are at stake; he knows
that he has a chance to prove his
innocence if he can just buy a little
time-time that he urgently needs to
find out who’s behind the fr.,me up.
He u n derstands all o f this
implicity-because Danny Roman is a
Chicago Police officer-and the best
hostage negotiator in thedepartment.
But right now, Roman is a hostage
taker-and he needs someone who
will listen to him. So he asks that
Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey), a re
spected negotiator from another pre
cinct, be brought in to mediate. The
cool, cerebral Sabian squares offwith
his formidableand furious opponent,
a man he knows only by reputation,
as he attempts to understand and
defuse the explosive situation.
Although he begins his task con
vinced that Roman has had a com
plete breakdown, Sabian starts to
wonder whether this hostage taker is
indeed a man gone mad or, instead,
what Roman claims to be-an honest
cop who must break the law to find
justice forhimself. Ultimately, Sabian
is driven to answer the same ques-

lar music. The album courageously
blends trip-hop, punk, hip-hop,
am bient art-rock, Indian m usic,
British drum and bass and jun g le
sounds with R achid’s own gospel
laced vocals and classical music
inclinations. L yrically, it is a co l
lection o f stories that take you on
the inner jou rn ey o f a highly cre
ative 24 year old trying to find his
place in a w orld m arred by con
flict. Struggling w ith his own is
sues o f race, religion, and iden
tity, Prototype is a pow erful in

Ghostcalling, a poignant auto
biographical track, addresses a
childhood with som ething m iss
ing. R achid’s father was often
absent, due to his w ork, which
meant a lot o f tim e on the road and
in the studio. As the narrator in
the songs sings, “ W hen I needed
you most/1 'd call upon your ghost .”

schedule of classical music to Port
land Parks again this summer.
The USWEST Portland Festival
Symphony, under the leadership of
maestro Lajos Balogh, established
the first regular free outdoor sym
phony concerts in the Portland area
in 1981. We have continued these
concerts every year since.
The orchestra is comprised of
musicians from the Oregon Sym
phony, Portland Opera Orchestra and
musicians Local 99.
