Investigation Reveals
Youths At Psychiatric
“Boys Ranch” Beaten
Y ouths at the A rizona Boys Ranch
which uses psychiatric behavior modi fi-
cation w ere routinely beaten and as
saulted by w orkers, according to the
results o f an investigation by the State o f
California. T he C alifornia Departm ent
o f Social Services investigates found
that physical and psychological abuse
were rampant at the facility, and that start
m em bers used violent m ethods to obtain
cooperation from the boys. The facility
cam e under intense scrutiny after Nick
C ontrarez.a 17yearoldboy,diedduring
a violent confrontation with the start'in
February. A ccording to the LA Times,
Cali fom ia officials said n a statem ent on
July 7, 1998 that they w ould withdraw
all federal and state funding to counties
choosing to send juvenile offenders to
the facility. C alifornia has banned any
further placem ents at the facility. H un
dreds ofC alifom ia boys had previously
been sent by j u v eni lej ust ice courts to the
psychiatric facility.
TheCal ¡fomia investigator found that
abuses included arm twisting, hitting
boys in the stomach, hitting a b o y ' s head
against a pole repeatedly, stepping on a
boy’s hand, hitting a boy on the nose and
cheeks and behind the ears. In addition,
water w as often denied to the boys, and
the young men w ere often refused the
right to use the bathroom . The boys
reportedly w ere never allowed to call
their parents on the telephone w ithout

said, “Psychiatric behavior m odifica
tion techniques such as these are basi
cally brain w ashing and mind control
techniques. This is an exam ple o f why
psychiatry is the biggest failure o f the
20th century, and is unable to get any
verifiable result on their clients. Psy
chiatrists and their staff abuse those sent
to them for help and m ake them worse.
Hitting, pulling, pinching and twisting
arms, and denying boys the right to use
the bathroom are abusive practices, and
are typical o f the type o f reports the
