James N a tf LL 'Worship fin d (Praise No Place L ife Nome: Live Prom New Yor^ Like a painter with a vast array ofcolors on his canvas. James Hall has spent his life learning to paint with soul-deep music and vivid imagery . From the classical training he received inhisyouth.totheG ospel.jazz.popand r&bthat are all different shades and hues on his musical palette, James Hall and his 40- voice choir, “Worship & Praise,” have created something all their own. And on their fourth and latest release. Live From New \ ork, the picture is more diverse, colorful and inspiring than ever. This project was recorded at a live performance at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. It’s the first time in history that a Gospel act recorded an album and video live at Lincoln C enter. Touches o f both traditional Gospel, and James’ background in classical music, shine on a slow and soulful reinterpretation ot the classic hymn “Hold To G od’s Unchanging Hand.” The results are a unique and diverse amalgam o f styles- traditional and contemporary - that could indeed only be accurately dubbed "the James Hall sound.” James formed the first incarnation ot Worship And Praise in 1987, when he was still in high school. The group remained intact alter graduation as their popularity grew. Theircareerexploded in 1993, when "God is inC ontrol, the title song from their debut album, swept the nation. More than just a hit, the song had a strong hand in ushering in a new era o f contemporary urban gospel. Today, the number remains as popular as ever, and has become James Hall s signature. It was released on a small, independent label, which was unable to meet the demands o f retailers for the album, as Jam es’ star rocketed across the Gospel firmament. It was then, that national Gospel power house Intersound, now CGI, stepped in and took over the task o f carrying James’ music and message to the masses. As L iv e F ro m New Y o r k continues to open new and exciting doors tor their life’s work, James’ personal both James Hall &W orship And Praise, and the mission they had taken on as dreams remain simple and clearly focused. “My prayer and hope is that our 0 b i t tt a r i e s Inez - Triplett - Maiden name o f Akres Friends Were Invited To Attend Graveside Services - Service will be on Wednesday, July 1st at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. M c K inley B i rt First things first, let mecorrect my error o f last week. The correct title o f the book identified by many as a model for the kind o f economic de velopment expected from the "M il lion Man March” is as follows. “An Empire o f Their Own: How The Jews * Invented [not “built”] Hol- lyw ood,” Neal G abler, A nchor Books, doubleday, 1988. Obviously there is an intrinsic difference in connotation; the term “invention” suggests an inspired an imaginative accomplishment, and the marchers needed no less. In fact, there still is a strong need for real economic struc ture. We begin our offering with the recent definitive work on a uniquely American figure who had a measur able effect on tens o f millions of people, infants, children, and the adults into which they‘matured.’ "Dr. Spock: An American Life,” Thomas Maier, Harcourt Brace & Co., 1998. With the nation enveloped in con fused controversy over responsibil ity for the violent and alienated state o f its children, critical attention is being focused on both past and cur rent gurus o f the child rearing genre. Prozac not seen as the answer. Critical attention is being paid to thoroughly research books like “The War Against Children,” Peter R. Breggin, MD, St. Martins Press (au thor o f “Talking Back To Prozac"). Two years before the current round o f schoolyard mayhem, Dr. Breggin was warning us that Jonesboro, Springfield, etc. were coming and made the following statement. “...The drugs, programs and theo ries o f the psychiatric establishment are threatening America’s children by I with a medical cure for violence.” Many say we should have listened to the man who anticipated the Colum bia Uni versity chemical brain test on 34 black boys (Associated Press 4/ 18/98 “heart valve dangers). And we sh o u ld have e x p ected m ore “Tuskeegee” experiments on both blacks and poor whites. Breggins tells you where to look in your city and at your neighborhood school. Also, try these from your favorite book store: “The Moses Mystery: The Afri can Origins o f the Jewish People,” Gary Greenberg, Carol Publishing Group, 1996 ISBN 1-55972-371-8; Mr. Greenberg is quite serious. He is president of the highly regarded “Bib lical Archaelogy Society o f New York.” He submits “evidence” that there were no 'Jew s’ in Palestine before they headed north out ofEgypt. “History On Trial: Culture Wars and The T eachi ng o f the Past," Nash, Crabtree and Dunn, Alfred A. Knofl, 1997. A revealing inside look at how the major academics, and govern ment agencies control the teaching o f our past and how “history stan dards” are established. “The past is what I say it is.” The following group o f six books is to be regarded as a special infor mation set-not so much that they are immediately available from a cata log house at a substantial discount- but because they fit very well with a concept I am developing for my “Neighborhood Science Clubs. " The “whole village” ‘and’ “whole child" concept. Technology, science and math ematics are important, but only com prise a part o f life. Humanity, cul ture, hope and wonder are critical to the development o f our increasingly alienated children and youth. And in the particular case, this list jointly selected by parents and kids reflects the increasing ethnic diversity o f a particular northeast neighborhood. “Darwin, A Lifeln Science," White and Gribbin, Code 80005, $6.98.
