NBA-Buffls' coach Phil Jackson departs
Phil Jackson
Chicago Bulls’ coach Phil
Jackson reiterated last Mon
day, he was quitting the six
time NBA champions and
suggested in a press report
that superstar Michael Jor
dan could put a magical cap
to his career by retiring.
“ It’s time to go. I’ve been
pushing at this horn a little bit
for the last couple of years
about leaving and about being
ready to leave, and it’s my
time to go. It’s the right time
for me,” Jackson told report
ers before leaving the team ’s
suburban practice facility.
Jackson told Newsweek he
had turned down an offer
from B u lls’ ow ner Jerry
R ein sd o rf to rem ain the
te a m 's coach, saying he
wanted “to enjoy some dif
ferent things.”
Jackson, referred to as the
“Zen-master" by his players,
also told the magazine that
Jordan could put a “magical
ending” to his storied career
by retiring.
Jordan, 35, has said he
would not play for another
coach, though he has also
hinted he might return for
another season or two but
would make that decision at
the end of the summer.
A week ago, the Bulls cap
tured their sixth champion
ship in the last eight seasons
with a 4-2 Finals series vic
tory over the Utah Jazz.Jack-
son guided the Bulls, featur
ing Jordan and free-agent
sidekick Scottie Pippen, to
all six NBA crowns.

I am writing to invite and ask for
your help by participating in a noble
venture. After seven long years o f
correspondence, both written and
verbal, conferences and at times
pleading. I am about to realize my
dream o f bringing boxing back to
the youth o f our nation. I have
founded a youth rehabilitation or
ganization whose dynamics are the
sport o f boxing, with a char
acter and life skills develop
ment and training program.
I have opened the doors
to the “Last Chance to get a
Life Foundation, “ aimed at
helping troubled, disadvan
taged youth, who have fallen
to crime and corruption,
landing them in the juvenile
detention system. The Foun
dation works with the court
system by offering youth a
choice o f detention or par
ticipation in my program.
Decades ago, organizations simi
lar to our sponsored boxing gyms
and tournaments that gave order and
purpose to wayward lives produc
ing many boxing legends and cham
pions, such as Sugar Ray Robinson,
George Foreman, Jake La Motta,
Rocky M arciano, M ike Tyson,
Muhammed Ali. Our facility in Las
Vegas is theonlyjuveni le hall affili
ated with the sport o f kings.
The boxing community at large
has endured a fervent campaign to
ban the sport o f boxing in America
by phasing it out. This “inquisition”
was fueled by ignorance, bigotry
and enmity. When gyms and schol
arships were taken away, many
young amateur boxing programs
throughout the land were forced to
shut down. This forced a lot o f kids
into the streets, thus, plunging them
into a life o f crime, as gang affilia
tions were their new “families." Es
calation o f crime and illiteracy per
meated the land. But through it all.
boxing remains the ultimate test of
athletic progress, skill, speed, power
endurance, courage and the will to
win. Boxing events capture the raw,
pure nature of competition.
I need you to show your support
by your attendance at a amateur
boxing match, fund raiser, whose
theme is to honor the boxer’s of
tomorrow.
The date o f our fund-raiser ama
teur boxing event is Saturday, June
27th, from 2 PM to 5 PM at Mult
nomah Greyhound Park. We will
have at least 7 matches and live
music and entertainment. The foun

am asking you for your support to
help us secure the future o f these
young lives, as well as support the
art of boxing. We need a boxing
gym in the Concordia neighborhood.
We have the moral and legisla
tive support of the Don Long juve
nile center, because our primary ob
jective is to save our children. We
will instil I discipline and build char
acter in these kids by
showing them that there
are other avenues avail
able to them other than
those roads that lead to
incarceration and death.
Who knows, some may
emerge as champions of
the world.
Thank you for your
time and attention to this
worthy cause. We pray
for your participation and
support in any way you
can. The struggle continues, and we
know that you are busy, we’d love to
see you at this most worthy event.
Our goal is to build boxing centers
all over the country, and see them
rise again in every juvenile hall in
America.
Tickets are available at the door.
Ringside seat reservations are avail
able in advance by calling Mult
nomah Greyhound Park. Tickets are
$ 15 for ringside and $ 10 for general
admission.
You can sponsor 10 kids for $100.
These sponsorships are needed and
your help is appreciated.
