The gang violence, murders, robberies, burglaries and abuse of illegal drugs has taken its toll on the community. But the ditlerent local community organizations ot Portland are coming together to bring needed change in the area. In contrast to the rising crime ol drug related violence which claims the lives of inner-city youngsters each year in Northeast and North Portland-Northeast and North Portland mothers were heartened on May 9th by the special, Mother’s Day gifts they received from their children. Rev. Foster of St. Paul ( hureh of God & Christ opened the ceremony with a prayer. Barbara Roland the spokesperson tor the Drug-Free Marshals gave the opening address. Then Helen Sloan of Mother’s Against Gang Violence gave her story ot having lost a son to the violence and the problems of drugs in all of Portland. Next, was Frederick woods of Positive Youth Development who spoke of the problems of drugs and what it does to the lives of those strug­ gling with drug abuse. The special Mother’s Day event was organized by the Church of Scientology of Portland’s Drug-Free Marshals pro­ gram, in coordination with Positive Youth Development and Mother's EXPIRES 6/16/98 SAFEWAY o COUPON PLU 7408 Against Gang Violence. Over 50 children took the seven-point Drug Free Marshal’s pledge, received Ww UiCOH. their official Drug Free Marshal’s badges.
