Nuclear Tests
India admitted to conducting three un­
derground nuclear tests w hich had
touched o ff a strategic arms race with
Pakistan. The United States had re­
sponded by threatening India with eco­
nomic sanctions. The device tested in­
cluded a thermonuclear device, com­
monly known as a hydrogen bomb.
Nike Factories
Nike Chairman Phil Knight announcec
that his company is taking steps to im­
prove working conditions in Asian facto­
ries. Knight pledged that factory improve­
ments will consist o f raising air-quality
standards, increasing independent moni­
toring o f factories and raising the mini­
mum wage.

A federal appeals court ruled that anti­
trust restrictions on the sale o f Microsoft’ s
Windows software do not extend to the
com pany’s upcoming release o f Win­
dows 98. Microsoft can now ship its
u pdated W i ndo*"s so ftware to computer-
makers this week and require them to
include the company’s Internet browser.
Another antitrust complaint by the Jus­
tice Department could interfere with that
shipment.

The Oregon Health Sciences Univer­
sity will soon have an extended facility
call the Center for W om en’s Health. It
will open in 15 months. Many supporters
are anxiously anticipating this new health
center which would integrate outpatient
clinical care, research and education ser­
vices.
Turmoil In Indonesia
Rioters (mostly poor young Indone­
sians) had rampaged through Jakarta,
setting afire cars, shops and houses. They
targeted businesses owned by ethnic Chi­
nese and m em b ers o f the ru lin g
family.The government responded by
having tanks and 10,000 troops deployed
around the city.

doting father - Frank Sinatra was all of
these and more.

Herceptin
A new prescription called Herceptin is
the first to succeed in attacking breast
cancer in the lives o f some terminally ill
patients. It thwarts the defective genes
causing their disease. Herceptin attacks
the cancer at its genetic roots, a goal o f
science for two decades.
Macdonald Center
The Maedonald Center plans to start
eonstruction this summer on a $6 million,
four-story, assisted-living home for 54
people. The home will allow the ccnterto
care for frail residents who are also chroni­
cally mentally ill and have addictions,
other disabilities or terminal diseases.
