The Children
On the first day o f the sit-ins, in Nashville, Tennessee, eight young black
college students found them selves propelled into the leadership o f the civil
rights movement, as the m ovem ent and A m erica-entered a period o f dramatic
change. The courage and vision o f these young people changed history.
David I lalberstam, a tw enty-five year old reporter, was assigned to cover this
story... The Children is David I lalbertam 's brilliant and moving evocation o f
the early days o f the civil rights m ovem ent, as seen through the story o f the
young people-the C’hildren-w ho met in the 1960's and went on to lead the
revolution. M agisterial in scope, with a strong you-are-there quality. The
Children is a story one o f A m erica’s preem inent journalists has waited years
to write, a powerful book about one o f the m ost dramatic m oments in recent
A merican history.
77ie> Children bears the tradem ark qualities that have m ade David
I lalbserstam one o f the leading nonfiction writers o f our era. The Children is
his most personal book since The Best and the Brightest, a magnificent re
creation o f a unique period in America, and o f the lives o f the ordinary people
whose courage and vision changed history.
