Jantzen, INC. Workers In Vancouver, W ish.,
Eligible For NAFTA Trade Act Assistance
The U.S. Department o f Labor
announced that workers at Jantzen,
Inc., in Vancouver, Wash , have been
certified as eligible to apply for as
sistance and benefits under the North
A merican Free Trade A greement
(N A FTA ) transitional adjustm ent
assistance (TAA) program.
This certification covers the pe
riod from March 12,1997, to April 7,
2000, and could provide extra ben
efits to approx imately 430 workers i f
they are laid o ff or reduced to part
tim ew ork.
Employees at the company work
in the production o f swimwear for
children, women and men. The La
bor Department’s investigation found
the company is transferring produc
tion to Mexico, o f articles like, or
directly competitive with those pro
duced by the Jantzen, Inc., workers,
qualified the workers for NAFTA-
TAA assistance.
The transitional adjustment assis
tance program is authorized by the
North American Free Trade Agree
ment Implementation Act. The pro
gram became effective Jan. 1, 1994,
and covers workers laid off or forced
to work part-time because o f in
creased imports from Mexico or
Canada or shifts in production to
those countries.
Under the program a group o f
three or more employees who be
lieve they are affected by imports
from Mexico or Canada can petition
the governor o f their state for assis
tance.
A union or company official, or an
authorized community-based orga
nization also can petition on behalf
o f a firm ’s workers.
Petitions are available from state
employment service offices or other
Crime Stoppers
officials designated by the governor.
Based on the petitions, the Labor
Department investigates to confirm
whether workers were adversely af
fected by increased Mexican or C a
nadian imports or by transfer o f pro
duction to those countries.
After they are certified eligible,
workers may apply for benefits at a
state em ploym ent service office.
They may receive a broad range o f
reemployment and retraining ser
vices, including career counseling,
job placement assistance, job search
and relocation allowances, income
support during long-term training,
and support services such as child
care and transportation assistance.
