Reggie W h ite Decides
T o Play A g a in
Just two days after he announced
his retirement, Reggie White has
changed his mind and intends to play
for the Green Bay Packers next sea
son.
“I have re-evaluated my decision,”
White said in a statement released by
the Packers on Tuesday. “1 decided I
would not retire and that I would play
one more year.”
On Sunday, the 36-year-old de
fensive end said he was retiring be
cause of a bad back. He had planned
a farewell news conference in Green
Bay on Wednesday.
The NFL’s all-time leading sacker,
nicknamed the minister o f defense,
said he would explain why he changed
his mind at the news conference,
which is still planned as scheduled.
White had 11 sacks last year, giv
ing him 176 1/2 for his 13-year ca
reer. He was selected to the Pro Bowl
for a record 12th consecutive time
despite an ailing back that limited
him to part-time duty, and a case of
walking pneumonia the last month of
the season.
White helped lead the Packers to
two consecutive Super Bowl appear
ances, including the team’s 35-21
victory over New England in 1997.
The team lost this yearto the Denver
Broncos.
A memberoftheNFL’s75th anni
versary all-star team, he joined the
Packers in 1993 for four years and
$17 million after eight seasons with
the Philadelphia Eagles as the first
big-name free agent to switch teams.
White recently was criticized fora
speech to Wisconsin lawmakers in
which he spoke in racial stereotypes
and assailed gay lifestyle.
Irwin Wins 3rd Straight PGA Seniors
For the past three years. Hale Irwin
has done nothing less than dominate
the PGA Seniors’ Championship.
Hewas35 under par and averaged
6 9 .1 strokes for his last 12 rounds on
the 6,722-yard Champion course at
PGA National Golf Club. On Sun
day, Irwin became the first man since
World War II to capture three straight
titles with a 2-under 70.
Still, he does not want people to
be misled by the numbers.
“I think people look at it and say,
‘Well, it was a cake walk,'” he said.
“It wasn’t. I played very, very well.”
Irwin started his final round with a
birdie and added two more at 6 and
II for a 275 total and a seven-stroke
victory over Larry Nelson, who had
bo you w
n t to a « «
a closing 72.
With Irwin’s commanding lead,
there was little room for drama.
“It was like two different tourna
ments going on - it was seeing how
well Hale would play and seeing who
would finish second," Nelson said.
Nelson and Gil Morgan provided
the only true competition o f the day:
A race for second place - which was
worth $60,000 more than third - that
lasted until the final putt on No. 18.
