The Portland Metropolitan Youth
Mass Cho'r invites youth ages 4-18
years old to participate in a Spring
Youth Gospel music Workshop and
Concert at Augusta Lutheran Church:
2 7 !0 NE 14th and Knott. The work­
shop will be conducted by the Port­
land Metropolitan Choir Music Direc­
tor, Terry Davis along with local
songwriters and musicians. Work­
shop classes will include Gospel
Drama, Vocal Techniques, Musician
sessions, singing, dance and directing.
The workshop will begin Tuesday,
April 21, 1998 thru Friday, April 24,
1998 at 6:00 pm. The workshop will
culminate into a concert Saturday,
April 2 5 ,1998,6:30 pm. Admission is

Funeral services were held for Tho­
mas R. Vickers, Jr., at Bethel African
Methodist Episcopal Church on Tues-
day, April 14, 1998.
M r. Vickers was bomJune22,1917
in West Palm Beach Florida, the sec­
ond son o f Dr. and Mrs. Thomas R.
Vickers, Sr. He attended Payne Chapel
A.M.E. Church in West Palm Beach,
and was a member of Bethel A.M.E.
Church until his death. Mr. Vickers
graduated from Industrial High School
in 1935, earning track and football
scholarships. He attended several col­
leges and universities, among them
Morehouse, Bethune-Cookman and
T uskegee University.
Mr. V ickers served in WW11
(Army) in the North African Cam­
paign and after discharge in 1945,
returned to college on the G.I. Bill.
While helping his brother relocate to
Portland, he met Dorothy E. Alexander
o f Seattle, Washington. Deciding to
remain in Portland, they were married
in 1950. Thomas attended Vanport
College and received his B. A., in Edu­
cation, and later his M.A. (also in
Education) from the University of
Portland.
After earning his Teaching Cre­
dential, Thomas taught for the Port­
land Public School District, beginning
in 1948. He taught at several schools
in the district, including Boise,
Glencoe, Marshall, Adams, and Vo­
cational Village. He retired in 1981,
but continued his involvement in edu­
cation through his varied civic activi­
ties.
Among Thomas’ many civic and
community involvements, beginning
in 1952, he held local, state and na­
tional leadership positions in the fol­
lowing organizations: The Price Hall
Masons, the N.A.A.C.P., the Urban
League, the Royal Esquire Club, the
I.B.P.O.E. o f W., the Kappa alpha psi
Fraternity, and the Phylaxis Society.
Thomas lived with and fought his
cancer for eight years, departing this
life on April 7, 1998 - the day of his
48th wedding anniversary. He passed
away peacefully at home, and leaves
to cherish his memory, his wife, Dor­
othy, and daughter, Sharon. His
brother, Carle Richard Vickers, pre­
ceded him in death in December, 1997.
Thomas also leaves to mourn his
passing one nephew, Carle Wayne
Vickers - Stevens Ranch, California,
and four sisters-in-law , Evelyn
Vickers-West Palm Beach, Florida,
Jaunita Davis-Seattle, WA.,Jacquiline

loving and dedicated extended family
members and friends.

Oscar C. Taylor, Sr.
Mr. Taylor was bom on Novem­
ber 28, 19 2 1 in Hattiesburg, Missis­
sippi to the parents o f Ned and Willie
Mae (Dawkins) Taylor. He passed
away in Portland, Oregon on March
22, 1998 at the age o f 76 years.
Cause o f death is age related.
Oscar was a Staff Sgt. in the U.S.
Army. He served in W.W.II from
April 17 I94l to June 2, 1946.
He has lived in Portland since about
1945. he first worked for Southern
Pacific Railroad for 7 years, then Rich
Manufacturing Company for 8 years
and the last 25 years he was a machin­
ist for Columbia Steel Company in
Portland. He retired in 1983. he was
also a member o f the Masonic Lodge.
