1998 AUTO REVIEW
Saab 9-5
LAND ROVCR
T his model year. Land Rover loses
one model from its U.S. line-up— the
Defender 90. The Range Rover remains
unchanged. T he Discovery sport util
ity, which originally filled the niche
between the basic D efender and the
sophisticated Range Rover, undergoes
m inor tweaks. Discovery will now be
available in w o m odels— LE and
LSE— instead of three.
LAMBORGHINI
O nly one Lamborghini model, the Diablo
Roadster, is sold in the U .S., and that won t
change in the 1998 model year. O n the plus
side, anti-lock brakes are now standard on
th e D iab lo , w hich at a base price o f
$275,000, is to be expected. T he V I 2 en

PORSCHC
T h e Boxster is still the h o t news at
Porsche, and gets new side airbags. Look for
a familiar b ut all-new 911 to be introduced
during 1998 as a 1999 model. Powering
the new 911 is a new water-cooled engine,
replacing the traditional air-cooled engines
that have powered 911s from the beginning.
T he current 911 model returns in 1998,
except tor the 911 Turbo, which is no longer
available.
ROLLS ROVCC/BCNTLCV
T he creme de la creme of automobiles
undergoes little change in the new model
year. The entry-level $ 159,000 Rolls Royce
Silver Dawn is gone, leaving only the turbo
charged Silver Spur and the custom -built
Park Ward limousine. Over at Bentley, the
base Brooklands becomes the R, and gets a
new grill, wheels, and light-pressure tu r
bocharger. A new RT model is added,
which comes w ith a 400-horsepow er V8
engine. T he Azure convertible and C onti
nental coupes are relatively unchanged.
SAAB
T he 900 receives a num ber o f small
changes, including a new hydraulic clutch
and some new colors; the V6 engine has
been dropped in favor of high performance
four-cylinders. T he 1998 Saab 9000 will
be produced in lim ited quantities since it
will be replaced next spring by the all-new
9-5 luxury sport sedan, loaded with good
ies, which makes its debut as a 1999 model.
