During the summers of 1981, 1986, and 1989,

Amistad:
The Untold Story
In the sum m er of 1839, fifty-
three African captives led a revolt
aboard the Spanish slav e ship
Amistad, killing all but two of their
captors. In a failed attem pt to sail
home, they find them selves at the
mercy o f the A m erican ju stice sys
tem. “ It is the only time in history
that a group o f blacks who were
captured in A frica...en tered the
American courts, won their free
dom and returned hom e,” accord
ing to historian Dr. Howard Jones.
"A m istad" is currently the sub
ject of a m ajor motion picture d i
rected by Stephen Spielberg and
produced by D ebbie A llen. A l
though several Black d ire c to rs
passed on the film. A llen 's choice
of Spielberg as director was seen
as an insult to some. In addition,
Spielberg was slapped with a $10-
ny Ilion lawsuit by B arb araC h ase-
R'boud. She claim s the director
Irtfed "the structure and flow ” and
the "fictitious characters" from her
1989 novel. "Echo o f the L ions."
