H o m e ly !, from the campy title
and ‘ 50s pulp fic tio n c o v e r a ll to

spent the last seven years proving
themselves the hard way. 1997 sees
payback time T c llin ’ Stories is the
story o f hard w ork and crazy
amounts ol upsets and mishaps.

territory. The Charlatans U.K. built
an incredible fo llo w in g that sees
their debut single "Ind ia n Rope”
go on to sell 20.()()() copies on their
very own Dead. Dead. Good label,
w ith very little press or radio airply.
The debut album, Some F riendly
enters the charts at # I .
As they begin to work on their
l ollow-up. the band starts to fall apart.
Jon Baker leaves the group and is
replaced by Mark Coll ms and Martin
Blunt suffers a nervous breakdown.
Between I Olli and I lilt is an under
standably moody set o f songs w hich
sounds like it was recorded outside,
in a rainstorm. The album is released
to critical indifference.
Rob C ollins is involved in a id
ing and abetting in an armed rob-
bery. As he sits in jail fo r 4 months,
the rest o f the band gets down to
business w orking on the third a l
bum In early 1994 the aptly titled.
Up To O ur Hips is released, de
spite the fact that Roh was absent
fo r much o f the recording. A ll
R ob’ s parts were either fra n tica lly
put down before he went Io ja il or
slapped on after Ins release when
the record was finished. That sum
mer, after a handful o f feverish
B ritish gigs. J im is asked to sing
on "L ife Is Sweet” by longtim e
fans the Chem ical Brothers It sees
the light o f day almost a year later
on the Chemicals debut album. Exit
Planet Dust. The Charlatans U .K
head back to the studio to make a
new record in less stressed circu m
stances.

John ßlake Jr - Jazz Violinist
teacher, lecturer and author. Blake
first gained international prominence
as a sideman in the Grover Washing
ton, Jr. Band in the m id-70’ s where
he toured and recorded for three
years. The group was one o f the first
to successfully cross over from the
jazz field into the R &B market with
Blake’ s violin playing a major role.

In the mid-eighties. Blake made
his debut as a band leader and com
poser w ith 5 Gramavision record
ings from 1983 through 1988 His

1992. marked a return to the studio as
a leader follow ing a four-year hiatus.
He was joined by Joe Ford. Charles
Famhrough. Ben Riley. Omar H ill
and Joey Caldcrazzo, and on two
cuts by legendary saxophonist.
Grover Washington. Jr. this album
emerged as a very intimate and
straight ahead homecoming celebra
tion. One o f the most outstanding
songs on this recording is John’ s
rendition o f “ Sm ile", a tune written
by the silent film star and director,
