in downtown Portland, Oregon. Be
ing uncommonly acceptable at that
time for A frican-A m ericans and
Whites to worship together, an area
o f the First Baptist Church building
was extended to the A frican-A m eri
cans for their own separate worship
service. This type o f arrangement
continued until Mount Olivet Baptist
Chruch (Mt. Olivet) relocated to an
other facility being financially aided
through the M issions o f the Oregon
Baptist Convention with the assis
tance o f Deacon Failing ofFirst Bap
tist Church.
Mt. Olivet broke ground for its first
church in 1921 on the com er o f N.E.
First and Schuyler Streets. The church
building was com pleted in 1923 at a
cost o f $30,000. In most recent years,
Mt. Olivet has purchased and reno
vated two existing buildings in North
Portland which are used for worship
services and other church related
activities.
On August 24,1997, twenty-four
(24) o f the tw o-thousand (2,000) Mt.
Olivet member congregation went
back to its beginning and worshipped
at First Baptist Church in downtown
Portland. Accom panying the group
was Mrs. Norma Logan-Gabner, the
granddaughter o f the late Mr. J.C.
Logan, a founding mem ber o f Mt.
Olivet. They were warmly received
by Pastor Ron Johnson and the con
gregation. There was m uch joy
shared by a few o f first Baptist mem
bers who discovered that their an
cestors had a part in Mt. O livet’s
beginning. Mt. Olivet has always
been and will always be grateful to
First Baptist Church for their sup
port in 1897 as well as during its
early years.
Following the service on August
24, the twenty-four (24) members
went and gathered on the steps o f
their first home on N.E. First and
Schuyler Streets for a prayer o f grati
tude led by Mrs. Willie Mae Hart, a
m em ber who joined Mt. Olivet in
April 1939.1twasaprayerofthanks-
gi ving and gratitude to the Founders
o f Mt. O livet Baptist Church and to
those whose dedication and sacri
fices made it possible for the church
to exist these One Hundred Years.
In a letter from Pastor Ron
Johnson to the attendees, he ex
pressed gratification ofknowing that
part ofFirst Baptist’s history points
to them as Mt. O livet’s “M other”
church. He also expressed his ap
preciation for the participation Mt.
O livet has had in the life o f the
American Baptist Churches o f O r
egon.
Mt. O livet has w ithstood the
changes o f time and will continue to
do so as it looks forward to the next
millennium. It has an awesome
legacy and if the principles and in
tegrity upon which this church was
founded are withheld, the future o f
Mt. Olivet should prevail and have
an even greater legacy in its next

n my lifetime, I have experi
enced the need for hospital
ization.
On one particular stay, I was
awaken by the cries o f a patient in
an adjacent room. The cries were
not those one would associate with
physical pain. They seemed to
originate from deep spiritual dis
cord, with overtones o f confusion
and depression I listen to these
cries for a while before I finally
realized; through Jesus Christ I
have the power to comfort this
person from my own bed. I placed
a towel on the floor, to cushion my
knees, and began my conversation
with Jesus, After we covered some
major issues, I asked him to allow
me to pray for my neighboring pa
tient, on their behalf. He accepted
my request and 1 prayed with all my
heart for their spirit to be touched
and com forted. The Lord was
pleased with my love for my fellow
Patient and my faith in Him and
answered my prayer.
The patient had been in a state
o f turmoi 1 for hours. A fter my pray er
they calmed down in less than two
(2) minutes.
This is just a small minute ex
ample o f what we can accomplish
as Christians when we truly believe
and put our faith in Jesus Christ.
It’s almost like God is saying,
“ I've given you this gift o f faith,
just when did you plan on using it.
I’m waiting!”
We all possess the ability to
help others to the Glory o f God,
when we use our Spiritual Gifts to
their fullest.
We are like Terminals ofPower,
connected to God.
Once we turn on our hearts and
open a channel to the Lord, the
power we are capable o f transfer
ring, through Jesus’ love, is too
phenomenal to be measured. We’re
talking the limitless love o f God.
