Health van coming
The Adventist Medical Center public
health van, with its free and low -cost health
testing, screenings and education services,
will be arriving in the northeast commu­
nity in August. The van is scheduled Aug.
8-9 at 4212 N.E. Prescott for free blood

Songs fill Tualatin park
Singer-songwriter Cindy Pearson of
Astoria will lead her band in performances
o f folk rock ballads and topical songs
ranging in styles from R & B to reggae to
love songs. The Friday, Aug. 2 perfor­
mance starts at 6:30 p.m. and is free as
part o f the city o f Tualatin’s popular Con­
certs on the Commons series.

tion to Zambia scheduled
Aug. 4-28 to share technol­
ogy and collaborate to ad­
dress affordable housing.

members on world wide trade issues in the
Senate and she has my 100 percent support,"
stated Sen. John Lim , R-Gresham, chair of
the Senate Trade and Economic Develop­
ment Committee.
"In the coming 21st century, it is impor­
tant that we continue to expand trade inter­
nationally to make sure O regon’s economy
grows." Lim said.. Expanding international
trade to African countries is not limited to
South Africa, nor is every country fraught
with instability and unrest."

Reclaim the Slough Day with the Urban
League o f Portland, will be held Saturday,
Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to I p.m. Participants
w ill meet at Alberta Park or the Mt. Olivet
Baptist Church parking lot to be picked up
by buses and brought to W hitaker Ponds.
Free T-shirts and barbecue lunches will
be prov ided for the first 100 people reg­

Odyssey concert set
Odyssey will perform the music o f the
Moody Blues in Couch Park at Northwest
Glisan and 20th Avenue on Tuesday. Aug.
20 at 7 p.m. This concert has been re­
scheduled after a rainout earlier in the
summer.
Red Barons coming
Special appearances o f the Red Baron
Stearman Squadron w ill take place Mon­
day, Aug. 4 through Wednesday, Aug. 6 at
the Hillsboro Airport. The red and white,
smoke trailing, super Stearman are origi­
nal open-air cockpit biplanes reminiscent
o f aviation's early days. The free tour is
sponsored by Red Baron Frozen Pizza in
an effort to keep the lost art o f barnstorm­
ing alive.

have teamed up to fu nd the sixth annua/
Summer Youth Employment Program.
The program is providing summer
employment and entrepreneurial training
to 25 young people from N o rth and
Northeast Portland.
Youth in the program do lawn care and
maintenance w ork on homes occupied by
fixed-income senior citizens in North and
Northeast Portland. Every Friday they par­
ticipate in entrepreneurial training at the
Urban League.
When the weather doesn't permit the
crews to do lawn work, they perform com­
munity service projects for the Urban
League's Adult and Senior Services Depart­
ment or local charities.
In addition, A nthony Jefferson, the
Project coordinator, has enrolled many of
the participants in an evening basketball
league. "W e want to keep these kids in­
volved in positive activities all day. for some
o f them that means in the evening hours
when they can run into trouble.” Said
Law rence J. Dark, President and Chief Ex­
ecutive Officer o f the Urban League.
As the lead sponsor o f the program, NIKE
helped bring together the 44 other sponsors.
"NIKE was founded on the entrepreneurial
spirit o f Phil Knight and his coach Bill
Bowerman. That spirit continues today and
as a result provides employment to nearly
6,000 Portland residents. NIKE is proud to
assist the entrepreneurial efforts o f the Ur­
ban League and in particular this sum m er’s
youth corp.” said Doug Stamm, Director
NIKE Public Affairs.
The program is coordinated by the Urban
League o f Portland's male & Female Re­
sponsibility Program, which helps young
men and women learn the responsibilities of
adulthood.
The Urban League is a nonprofit, com m u­
nity-based human service, economic and
social justice agency serving youth and fam i-
lies, students, job seekers, and seniors in the
metro area. The League is one o f 115 local
affiliates o fth e national Urban League.
Summer at the zoo
Between now and Labor Day zoo visi­
tors can join the Research Action Team as
they try to answer some basic animal
behavior questions. Learn how zoo re­
searchers gain valuable information to
help them care for endangered species.
The program is sponsored by the Textronic
Foundation and staffed by ZooTeens.

Angelou is internationally recognized
as an author, actress, dancer, singer, play­
wright and teacher.
Having risen above great misfortune,
including being raped at age 8, Angelou
serves as a shining example o fth e capac­
ity o fth e human spirit to overcome trag­
edy.

homelessness, becoming a single mother
at 18. turning to prostitution to support
herself and her child, and fighting to save
her brother from a life o f drugs and crime.
The Oct. 30 gala will take place at the
Portland Marriott.

Proceeds will support the center’s pro­
grams, including the careofseverely abuse
and neglected preschool children, infants
and toddlers prenatally exposed to drugs
and alcohol and adolescents struggling
w ith problems involving substance abuse
and violence.

Groups gather for
annual festival
he Portland/Vancouver Chapter o f
the Gospel Music W orkshop o f
A m erica,. will host the 4th annual Dawson
Park Gospel Music Festival Aug. 23 from
11 am to 6 pm in Dawson Park, located on
North V ancouver A venue across from
Emanuel Hospital.
The festival will feature live gospel mu­
sic, vendors, and Portland area residents
coming together to minister and celebrate
the name o f our Lord in song.
The festival was established in 1993 by
Joyce Boles as a means o f preserving the
religious and cultural values o f gospel mu­
sic, and to keep arts alive in the Northeast
Portland community.
This year, groups are coming from Se­
attle and Oakland, making the festival an
emerging regional cultural event. It is the
largest all-African-American event in O r­
egon.
As many as two dozen choirs and groups
and three dozen artisans and food vendors
have attended the festival in years past
The Gospel Music W orkshop of America
was created to establish a volunteer asso­
ciation o f gospel choirs, choruses, en­
sembles, quartets, soloists, instrumental­
ists. and musicians for the purpose o f edu­
cation, cooperation, and communication in
the perpetuation, promotion, enhancement,
and advancement ofthe principles o f Chris­
tianity and the role o f gospel music in the
heritage and culture o f African-Americans
o f all ages.
The organization is nonprofit and nonpo­
litical.
