Batman flies high
George C looney’s debut as the
Caped Crusader, "Batman and
Robin,” flew to the top of the
weekend box office chart. The
latest Batman film earned an esti
mated $43.6 million. T hat’s not
as much as industry analysts ex
pected and not as much as its
predecessor “Batman Forever"
made in itsopening weekend. "My
Best Friend's W edding” opened
in second place with a surprising
$21.5 million — the best debut
ever for a romantic comedy and
the best for any Julia Roberts film.
“Con Air," slipped a notch to third.

Daemyon with Sandra Wadsworth

Clooney favorite
George Clooney has the batseal
of approval from Bob Kane, the
comic book artist who created the
Caped Crusader. “H e’s very suave
and d e b o n a ir," Kane said of
Clooney, who is making his debut
as B atm an in "B atm a n and
Robin.” “He has a strong jaw like
the character I drew originally.

The demise of Chuckles the
Clown on "The Mary Tyler Moore
Show” has been chosen as the No.
I television episode of all time by
TV Guide. That was the episode
in which Mary was unable to stifle
her laugher at Chuckles’ funeral
and it also gave birth to the line "a
little song, a little dance, a little
seltzer down the pants.”
Sly admits arrogance
Sylvester Stallone concedes that
he was an unguided missile before
he settled into his relationship
with Jennifer Flavin and marry
ing her last month. He was bounc
ing from one supermodel to an
other in what Stallone says was
“something I had to go through ...
I wish I’d had more maturity.
Maybe I had the inability to recog
nize how other people percieved
me. It was an arrogance."
Not Fonda dad
Peter Fonda didn’t need to do
much research to play a remote,
emotionally withdrawn character
in “Ulee’s Gold.” He knew all about
those kind of men from his father,
screen legend Henry Fonda. “I had
my own relationship to draw on
with my father that the public just
didn’t know,” Fonda told the Bal
timore Sun His performance in
“Ulee’s Gold" is being praised as
the best of his career.
