HMCS Vancouver is in the Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Ot­ tawa, named for the capital city of Canada will be a feature vessel at the 1997 Rose Festival In HMCS Ot­ tawa is the newest and last of twelve new multi-purpose warships built for the Canadian Navy. The Ship was delivered to its home port near Victoria, British Columbia last De­ cember 12. The Halifax Class Frig­ ate arrived in Portland at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and berthed south of the Steel Bridge. Under the command o f Cmdr. Gilles Goulet, Ottawa is 134 meters long and displaces 5,100 tonnes. The appearance o f National Night Out marchers in the Star­ light parade marks the first o f a number of crime prevention activi­ ties this summer. Always the first Tuesday in Au­ gust, this year’s National Night Out celebration is Aug. 5. On this night, neighborhoods in Oregon and nationwide will hold block midst of a deployment to six Asia- Pacific nations to build confidence in support of Canada’s foreign policy objectives through training. HMCS Ottawa is accompanied by four of the familiar 40 year old Bay Class Patrol Vessels, HMC ships Cowichan, Thunder, Chaleur, and Miramichi. These 50 meter long, 370 tonne ships will be paid off over the next two years as the Canadian navy takes delivery of 12 new Mari­ tim e D efence C oastal V essels (MCDV). Six of the 55 meter long, 970 tonne MCDV’s will be stationed in Esquimalt by 1999. Tri-Met unveils future fleet Air conditioning and low floor buses coming to a bus stop near you Tri-Met General Manager Tom Walsh, along with two customers with disabilities, today demonstrated the new fleet of the future - low floor buses. These buses allow faster and easier boarding for all passengers. Walsh added that Tn-Met plans to include air conditioning for all new buses ordered, and that all existing MAX light rail trains will be retro­ fitted for air conditioning. The Tri- Met Board of Directors will vote on the mater at its June 25 meeting. Addition­ ally, 65 high floor buses will also be delivered this fall. All new buses, including the 87 being delivered this fall, will in­ clude air conditioning. Walsh is also committed to retrofitting the 26 ex­ isting MAX light rail cars with air conditioning. It’s estimated that ret­ rofitting each MAX car will cost around $140,000, and should be complete by the time Westside MAX opens in September 1998. “Our goal is to provide quality service for all of our customers, Walsh said. “This includes having reliable accessible service, as well as air conditioning for our passengers. We believe that adding these fea­ tures will help to keep our custom­ ers, as well as attract new ones.” Tri-Met is now operating a low floor bus for three weeks on Line 15- NW 23rd/Mt. Tabor.
