Burt has touched the lives thousands
of people during his many decades
of achievement, and he’s by no
means “retired.”
As columnist for the Portland
Observer for over a decade, “The
Professor” writes weekly about the
issues of the day, often drawing from
early African and African American
history.
As a Professor at Portland State
University in the 1970s, he helped
prepare hundreds of students with
“real life” lessons in business, eco
nomics, and Black Studies courses.
Many, many Portland Public School
children - now grown - benefited
from his work with the school dis
trict. His best known publication,
B lack Inventors o f A m erica
launched a national history and re
search movement that continues to
day.
Well-wishers at the birthday cel
ebration, who dined on delicious
“birthday pies” from Mother Dear’s
Tasty Pastries, included: Greg
Benton, Phyllis Benton, Tom Booth,
Harriet Boyd, Mr. & Mrs. Carr,
Jeanette Carr, Cathy Galbraith,
Nathan Hart, Roslyn Hill, Janice
Ingersoll, Jennifer Johnson, Mr. &
Mrs. Charles Maxey, Kimberly

Pam Slaughter, The Observer’s Gary
Ann Taylor, Bernard Walker, and
R eflectio n s’ O.B Hill, G loria
McMurtry, Monica McMurtry, and
Vicky Hendricks.
A few well-wishers prepared spe
cial greetings for this surprise Happy
Birthday article:
“Dear Burt - When I think of you
in the early days of World War II, it
I would like to take this opportu
nity to wish Professor McKinley
Burt a Happy 75th Birthday !!! As a
student in one of McKinley Burt’s
classes at Portland State University,
I was impressed with not only his
knowledge but also his compassion
to assist African American students
commit themselves to excellence.
McKinley Burt has had a profound
influence upon me, my future
dreams, and my career achieve
ments. I applaud and congratulate
McKinley on making significant
contributions to the lives o f many
African Americans throughout his
many years.
O nce again, co n g ratu latio n

Thanks, and Keep on Keepin’ On!
brings back memones of the many
meetings ..you, me and many more

fight to urge President Roosevelt to
order Executive Order 8802. This
order stated: “no job should be de

effort”. We met, we fought, we per
severed, Just think Burt, we are not
that young anymore, but we will
forever keep thinking and saying
and pursuing “Freedom - Let It Ring
!”. Happy 75th Birthday from your
pal, Charles B. Maxey.
Happy Birthday to the Professor:
Mckinley Burt’s long standing com
