harmonies or counter melodies, play
rhythm instruments, add movement,
clap, dance, etc., as spirit moves us.

from which the print artists drew so
much of their subject matter.
The “floating world,” with its
glamorous courtesans and popular
actors, was the focus of urban m iddle
class culture during the Edo Period,
and the prints can only be under
stood within this context.
While the 1780s in Japan are
typically characterized as the “clas
sic” decade o f Ukiyo-e, it was the
“brilliant" decade of the 1790s that
witnessed the innovative talents of
such print artists as Choki, Sharaku
and Utamaro. There is something
daring and at the same time ex
tremely stylish about the prints of
this period. Cropping, unexpected
angles of vision, close-ups and the
mica background were all devices
that were either invented or that
first attained real popularity at this
time.
Ukiyo-e Prints is being presented
in honor o f the m em bers o f
Shokookai of Portland, a Japanese
business chamber, for their indi
vidual and collective support of the
permanent installation of the Japa
nese collection.

Japanese prints on the West Coast,
and is remarkably comprehensive:
Every period is represented and vir
tually every technique and every
major artist.
But because Japanese prints are
highly vulnerable to damage from
prolonged exposure to light, the col
lection has never been shown in its
entirety. Only a few prints can be
shown at any one time.
Ukiyo-e, literally "pictures of the
floating world,” refers to the plea
sure quarters and theater districts

art galleries at the Portland Art
Museum, a special exhibition of
Japanese prints will be on view in
the Gilkey Center at the Museum
for May 30 to August 3, 1997.
The exhibition is comprised of
over 50 works drawn primarily from
the highly-regarded Mary Andrews

Even for the most seasoned o f players, getting
Sprung’ can happen when they get played and
love blossoms despite all efforts to thwart it.
Sprung unfolds as two sets o f best friends hook
up one night after a party.
During the ensuing month, the couples learn
side-splitting but valuable lessons in love: the do’s
and don’ts, pros and cons o f committed relation
ships and singledom in a way that is sure to provoke
hi-fivesall around.
The film also stars Joe lorry (Poetic Justice)
and Paula Jai Parker (Friday) as well as cameos
from Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford ( The
Jeffersonsjand John Witherspoon.
