Fulghum and
Habitat for Humanity

has teamed up w ith one o f this
countries best known nonprofits,
Habitat fo r Humanity International.
F u lg h u m ’ s latest book, T R U E
L O V E (HarperCollins: Feb. 14,
1997) is a compilation o f stories
told to and by him which relate to
the mystery, confusion, elation
and pain associated with the in­
c re d ib le
experience o f love.
Fulghum has gone beyond w riting
about love, and decided to cel­
ebrate the spirit o f true love by
donating all net royalties from the
sale o f the book to Habitat for Hu­
manity fo r its work.
In the introduction Fulghum
writes, “ To Habitat for Humanity,
founded on the principal that the
ultimate grace is found in the simple
adm onition, Love one another.’ ”
About choosing Habitat for Hu­
manity as his beneficiary, Fulghum
states, “ It is one o f the two or three
charitable organizations I most re-
spect. I especially admire former
President Jimmy Carter’ s role with
Habitat.

Habitat for Humanity Interna­
tional is a nonprofit, ecumenical
Christian housing ministry. Habi­
tat works in partnership w ith people
in need throughout the w orld build­
ing simple, decent shelter that is
sold to them at no profit, through
no-interest loans. Funds, building
materials and labor are donated by
individuals, churches, corporations
and other organizations who share
our goal o f elim inating substan­
dard housing in the world.
Founded in 1976 by M illard and
Linda Fuller, Habitat has helped
over 250,000 people in over 50
counties have a decent place to call
home.
Norwest stock soars
N orw est Corp said on M o n ­
day its board o f directors autho­
rized the company to acquire up
to tw o m illio n additional shares
o f com m on stock, g iv in g the
company a total comm on stock
repurchase authorization o f 5.1
m illio n shares.
The financial services company
has 374 m illion common shares
outstanding.
The shares w ill be used for ac­
quisitions, benefit plans, conver­
sion o f convertible securities and
other corporate purposes, the com­
pany said.
“ The buyback program w ill con­
tinue to be managed in a manner
that w ill not prevent Norwest from
using pooling o f interests account­
ing for acquisitions,” said John
Thornton, ch ie f financial officer.
Norwest shares were up 3/4 at
50-7/8 Monday.
University of Texas

sure they don’t opt out on some o f
those things by indicating it is up to
the discretion o f the applicator to
make a choice on which, i f any, o f
those methods or sites w ill be
treated.”
“ Secondly, i f you have repeated
applications on a monthly or b i­
monthly basis-whatever you agree
upon— make sure that is something
that is absolutely necessary. Make
sure you aren’t just receiving an
application to your property at regu­
lar intervals whether you need it or
not.”

homework. Check with the Oregon
Department o f Agriculture to make
sure the company or companies you
are considering are licensed with
the department.
A ll pesticide operators and appli­
cators must be licensed— which as­
sures they have demonstrated at least
a required m inim um amount o f
know ledge and competency in using
pesticides. I f a company isn’t li­
censed, don ' t hire them. Report them

complaint history. Some may have a

homeowner. Although there are
many qualified and reputable busi­
nesses out there, the Oregon Depart­
ment J f Agriculture advises Orego­
nians to heed the two words that
mean so much in the world o f con­
sumerism: buyer beware.
“ Contracting with a pesticide op­
erator or lawn care provider is be­
c o m in g more com m on due to
people’ s constraints on tim e,” says
Janet Fults, ODA pesticide investi­
gator. A lot o f people have reserva­
tions about handling pesticide prod­
ucts themselves and would rather
leave that to somebody who does it
as a profession."
Still, Fults recommends that you
don’t automatically rule out doing it
yourself.
