Ronald Cotton (above), and
Jennifer Thompson (below).
On a hot July night in 1984, in
Burlington, North Carolina, Jenni
fer Thompson, a twenty-two-year-
old college student, was asleep in
her apartment when she heard a
noise. She opened her eyes to see a
black man with a knife. “ When I
asked what he wanted, he proceeded
to take off my underwear,” Thom p
son says, in a harrowing account o f
that night. “At that point, I realized
that I was going to be raped. I didn’t
know if he would kill me.” If she
lived, she prom ised herselfshe wou Id
make sure he paid the price.
Days later in a police lineup, she
picked out Ronald Cotton as the
Rapist. Then in 1995 new DNA
evidence showed Cotton had not
raped Jennifer Thompson and set
him free. He had spent eleven years
in prison for a crime he did not
commit.
ln “ What Jennifer Saw ,"FRO N T
