Robin Yu of Portland is the recip­
ient of the 1997 Very Special Arts
Panasonic Young Soloists Award, a
national honor given each year to
talented young musicians with dis­
abilities. Robin, a 17-year-old vio­
linist who has Glycogen Storage
Disease (GSD)--a rare congenital
medical condition that affects I in
10 ,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 -will receive a $5,000
scholarship and the opportunity to
perform at The John F. Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts in
W ashington, D C. on T uesday,
March 25, 1997.
The scholarship money will as­
sist Robin in continuing her educa­
tion and her musical aspirations. "I
love to express myself through m u­
sic." said Robin “I want to show that
hard work can overcome disabling
conditions. We should do our best,
no matter what the circum stance.”
Robin has been playing the violin
for the past eleven years and has
been winning aw ards along her

soloist with the Oregon Symphony,
was recently selected to perform last
year as a soloist with ge Portland
Youth Philharm onic Preparatory
Orchestra.
Established by Very Special Arts

the Panasonic Young Soloist Award
provides scholarships to students
with disabilities who wish to pursue
their interest in music. The award
recognizes students with disabili­
ties, ages 25 and under, who have
exhibited outstanding talents as ei­
ther vocalist or instrumentalists

education and creative expression,
involving children and adults with
disabilities, thereby strengthening the
human spirit and improving the qual­
ity of life for all. Founded in 1974 by
Jean Kennedy Smith as an affiliate ol

offers programs in creative writing,
dance, drama, music and the visual
arts for individuals with disabilities in
all 50 states and in more than 86
