best kept secret: the man known as RR (D ouble R) Richie R ich’s national
solo debut album . Seasoned Veteran, is a rather historic m om ent for both
hip-hop D ef Jam: this is R ichie’s first national debut after years o f running
O akland, and the first Bay A rea act ever to be signed to D ef Jam Records.
The story o f Richie Rich is both sad and C inderella-ish at the sam e time.
After T oo Short becam e more than ju st a local hero on the mic, a small
num ber o f other area rappers released album s, but were unable to escape the
shadow o fth e reigning rap king. In the w inter o f 1989. the streets o fO ak lan d
were surprised by a different sound o f a hardcore gangsta rap group called
4 15 (nam ed after the then O akland area code). G roup mem bers D -I.oc, DJ
Darry l and JED w ere all celebrated, but it was the distinct raspy voice and
dope gam e related lyrics o f a young Richie Rich that really enthralled
listeners The g ro u p ’s album , 41 Fivin, was a Bay Area classic selling
147,000 units. Like all groups, fans have their favorite m em bers, and with
RR clearly being the most lauded m em ber, he released a solo album entitled
D on’t D o4t, to help increase his bank account and the g ro u p ’s sales.
