Radio shirs anger Totish Roman Cathotic Church

country’s presidential hopefuls by the
Catholic media, includinganti-Semitic
remarks, PAP news agency said.
“ In the course o f the presidential
election cam paign good m anners and
the good name o f candidates are be

ment by the E piscopate’s M ass M e

“The Church is not involved in the
campaign. However, certain C atho
lic m edia such as Radio M aria (the
country’s biggest C atholic radio sta
tion) have becom e tools for spread
ing untruths."
The agency said it had learnt that

It clears path to Appeals Court
The order issued by Federal D is
trict Judge Peter K. Leisure in New
York City dism issed the only re
m aining libel claim brought by the
Church o f Scientology International
against Tim e m agazine.
A s sta te d by R ev. H e b e r C.
Jentzsch, President o f the Church o f
Scientology International, “ We are
astonished by this outcom e, but it’s
really a blessing in disguise. It will
give the C ourt o f A ppeals the op p o r
tunity to im pose order on the chaos
created by the D istrict C o u rt’s dis
missal rulings.
“They w o n ’t let a decision stand
that makes bias a defense for d efa
mation and we will be able to p ro
ceed to trial to prove that this story
was not only m alicious, but was a
p aid-for attack on the C h u r c h - a
charge that Tim e has never refuted.”
The Church sued Tim e and its
reporter, Richard Behar, on m ultiple
counts o f defam ation arising from a
May 1991 article.
All but one o fth e C h u rch ’s claim s
were dism issed in N ovem ber o f 1995
based on the incredible proposition
that B eh ar's bias against the Church
was so extrem e that it actually insu
lated Tim e from liability.
“ W ithout a show ing o f inadequate
in v estig atio n ,” the D istrict C ourt
wrote at that tim e, “bias m erely co n
firms the publisher’s firmly held be
lief in the allegedly defam atory state-

ments.”
“ In o th er w o rd s,” stated local
spokesperson, Angie Mann, “because
o f B eh ar’s own personal feelings,
Tim e go, aw ay with running a paid-
for “story" full o f m ade-up lies and
unfounded accusations.”
Rev. Jentzsch noted that several
other defam ation suits arising from
the Tim e article w ere resolved to the
C h u rch ’s satisfaction.
“T he Church staunchly advocates
free speech,” Rev. Jentzsch said, “ but
responsibility is a com ponent o f ev
ery freedom . M aking extrem e bias a
sa fe ty v alv e fo r irre sp o n sib ility
threatens everyone.”
Rev. Jentzsch also pointed out that
now here in any o fth e D istrict C o u rt’s
opinion is there any finding that the
statem ents for which the Church sued
Tim e w ere true.
“The C o u rt’s silence about falsity
is very eloquent,” Rev. Jentzsch ad d
ed, “Tim e had 28 days o f depositions
to substantiate the statem ents for
w hich the Church sued, and co u ld n ’t
do it. Tim e shouldn’t find com fort in
a dubious legal proposition that would
shield lies behind bias.”
