lis ‘ Phobias’ Saved Him
Comedian Maintains His Former Reputation as
a ‘Brash, Young Womanizer’ Was Exaggerated
Y our T icket O ut
"My home life is normal-not funny," says Murphy. At left: with his
wife, Nicole, and children (l-r): Myles Mitchell, Shayne Audra, and
Bria Lianna.
M aintaining that his reputa
tion as a brash young w om anizer,
with a huge ego and a large en
tourage was grossly exaggerat
ed, Eddie Murphy asserted, “ My
phobias saved m e.”
In an interview to be published
this Sunday in Parade m agazine,
Murphy explained, “ I lived at
home. Id id n ’td r in k o r d o heavy-
duty drugs. I’m a clean freak, so
I was always afraid o f catching
things in a sex scene. I’m not a
saint or anything, but 1 wash my
hands 100 times a day."
“ I was never buck-w ild,” he
added. “ I like normal girls. I got
to meet a lot f people, but I met
them like a regular guy, not like
a movie star. I’d read that 1 was a
ladies’ man. Well, I did love the
ladies. You’re supposed to.”
Recalling one story that was dam
aging to his reputation, which he
calls “The Elevator Story," Murphy
said, “It never happened.” He ex
plained, “There’s a story I was on an
elevator with 10 bodyguards. An old
lady was there. One bodyguard said,
Hit the floor, ’ as in press the button.'
The old lady got scared and dropped
to the floor. And we were so embar
rassed, and we helped her up, and I
sent her flowers and paid her hotel
bill, and it never happened! Here’s
the clincher: Whenever I go, No, it
never happened,’ they always say,
Yes, it did, my cousin was there.’”
As for the so-called entourage
that contributed to his air o f “self-
im p o rta n c e ,” M urphy in sists
those accusations were unfair.
“ When people say entourage’ —
that was the people I was friends
with in high school.” All he did,
Murphy said, was offer jobs to
his out-of-w ork pals.
“The only way you can stay in
touch with real emotions is to have a
real life,” commented Murphy, who
described his home life as “normal.”
“We’re just a boring couple,” he said
ofhimselfand wife Nicole, who spend
time together between 4 p.m. and
midnight every day.
Murphy, who will be seen later
this month in a remake of the 1963
classic, “The Nutty Professor," said,
“I haven’t felt this proud of a movie
for a long time.”
