3-4 and 10-11 at Portland State U ni­
versity O rtega has been an instructor
o f M exican folkloric dances in the
northw est for more than 10 years.
She also has taught at the D ance

The w eekend classes will take place

The first w eekend O rtega will fo­
cus on a dance from V eracruz, the
coastal state that has been influenced
by C uban dance and music. The sec­
ond w eekend will focus on a dance
from the state of G uerrero with its

rhythms.
No experience necessary to par­
ticipate. Full, long skirts are sug­
gested for women, men should dress
com fortably,in cloths allow ing ease
of movem ent.

Cinco de Mayo. P o rtlan d 's larg­
est bi-cultural festival, prom ises en ­
tertainm ent and enjoym ent lor the
whole family. O rganized by the P o rt­
land-G uadalajara Sister City A sso­
ciation, the event will run M ay 2-5 at
Tom M cCall W aterfront Park. F esti­
val hours are I I a.m. to m idnight
Thursday. Friday and Saturday and
11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Beginning at noon each day, m u­
sicians and dancers will fill the two
stages. Local and M exican perform s
will share their culture with the over
160,(XX) people expected to attend.
And visitors will be treated to the
tastes o f M exican food with the 40
vendors show casing P o rtlan d 's best
M exican kitchens I here will also be
gam es, arts and crafts and carnival
rides throughout the day.
G ru p o B a lle t F o lk lo r ic o de
G uadalajara return for their fifth year
to tin ill Portlanders with their superb
artistry. The troop is internationally
a c c la im e d , c h a rm in g a u d ie n c e s
throughout the world. M ariachi de
G uadalajara returns with the ballet.
G u ad alajara is the b irth p la ce o f
mariachis.
W elcom ing cerem onies with Vera
Katz will be Thursday at 5 p.m. Fri­
day night at 9:45 is the N ickel Ads
Firew orks Spectacular. A nd a natu­
ralization cerem ony, w elcom ing new
citizens, is scheduled for noon F ri­
day.
The d iversity o f M exican and
M exican in flu e n ced m u sic from
m ariachis to salsa will be a large part
ol Ihe event Suave also returns with
O r-M ex, a hybrid o f Tex-M ex, in­
digenous to O regon, as will Picante,
another festival favorite. Salsa band
C aliente will m ake an appearance,
and new com ers the W ood Tribe bring
Latin based alternative m usic.
C inco de M ayo is a celebration of
the 1862 battle o f Puebla, when a
sm all contingent o f M exican patriots
trium phed over the larger occupa­
tional forces o f N apoleon III.
T he Portland fair is the largest o f
its kind in the nation and organizers
w ant the festival to prom ote local
a w a r e n e s s o f th e h e r ita g e o f
G uadalajara and surrounding areas,
the roots o f m ost o f the M exican
A m erican population in O regon and
to encourage the know ledge o f O r­
egon in G uadalajara.
The event is free T hursday and
Friday until noon and $4 general
Flam enco dances by the Spanish
Pueblo Dancers, a southw est/M exi-
can buffet with authentic entrees and
desserts and prizes for guests dressed
in south o f the border style.
"Parties o f note” is a collection o f
Oregon Sym phony. T hese events will
be held May through A ugust and
appeal to a variety o f tastes, ranging
from elegant dinners to inform al gath­
erings afternoon excursions to par­
ties for children.
