Eight Questions To Ask Your Boss: Leading People Reveals A nsw ers from A m erica’s T op Bosses How w ould you define your ideal boss? A ccording to the new book “Leading People, Transform ing B usiness From the Inside O ut” (V iking, March 1996), author Robert R osen presents the eight most im portant characteristics for a boss to have and the questions to ask today to determ ine w hether your boss truly m easures up against the very best: 1. Vision: D oes your boss explain how your jo b fits into the big picture? 2. Trust: Is your boss open about him or herself and the financials o f the business? 3. Participation: Does your boss share inform ation and decision-m ak ing and hold you accountable for your actions? 4. Learning: Does your boss m ake it safe for you to m ake a m istake, to take risks and to learn? 5. Diversity: D oes your boss ac know ledge and m obilize peo p le’s differences and create a culture o f respect? 6. Creativity: D oes your boss fos ter a w orkplace that brings out your best creativity? 7. Integrity: D oes your boss pro m ote fairness and practice good eth ics? 8. Com m unity: Does your boss prom ote a sense o f com m unity and social responsibility? Does he or she have what it takes to unleash the com petence, creativ ity and com m itm ent o f people? D oes he or she dem onstrate the kinds o f leadership that result in healthy, prof itable organizations? All too often, people feel anger tow ard their bosses because there is a disconnect be- YOU ARE TOE MISSING PIECE! tw een what m ost business and politi cal leaders say and w hat they do. W hen leaders consistently fail to deliver on their prom ises, the result is rising levels o f cynicism , mistrust and resentm ent. Som e leaders look at all this cyni cism and m istrust and see opportu nity. Take a look at the thirty-six bosses discussed in L eading People. They include the perform ances turned in by the leaders o f ServiceM aster outside o f C hicago, Just D esserts in San Francisco, and the O regon S ym phony in Portland. It is leaders like A lan M ulally, vice president and general m anager o f B oeing’s 777 D ivision, who are practicing w hat they preach. M ulally was able to get 7,000 people in over a dozen countries, w orking in 238 separate design team s to com e to gether and build an entirely new plane in just four years. W hy is he succeed ing when others are failing? M ulally brought his people into the leader ship process, sharing his vision with them so they becam e full partici- pants and succeeded in achieving their goal. In L eading P eople, Dr R obert Rosen presents a blueprint for the kind o f leadership that results in h ealthy, p ro fitab le o rg an iz atio n s. A ccording to Rosen, A m ericans are hungry for new leaders; leaders with vision and character w ho guide their organizations to health and superior perform ance. T hey know that their business depends on building p o si tive relationships with their people better than their com petitors. T hese leaders also know that their success depends on treating their em ployees as assets, not costs, creating an e n v i ronm ent that brings out the best in people.
