Portland Opera announces
1996-97 Opera Season
Portland Opera General Director
Robert Bailey today announced the
details o f the Company’s 1996-97
Opera Season, comprised o f 22 per
formances o f five productions. High
lights o f the Company’s 32nd season
include the North American premiere
(in its fully staged and orchestrated
original form) o f Reynaldo Hahn’s
The Merchant ofV enice starring one
o f France’s most notable baritones,
Alain Fondary: the intriguing pairing
o f Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci with a
ballet and chorus performance o f Carl
OrfFs Carmina Burana: the season
opening production ofone o f opera’s
most popular works, Puccini’s Ma
dame Butterfly; as well as a host o f
returning and debuting guest artists.
Announcing the season, which
marks his fifteenth as General Direc
tor, Mr. Bailey commented that “ it is
a high point in this Company’s evo
lution. Continuing a tradition o f mak
ing a strong artistic statement with
each and every production, this sea
son will see, for the very first time,
two all - new productions, thereby
affording us even more complete
control over the artistic presentation.
Over the last few years our audience
has grown in both size and sophisti-
cation, and it is a great pleasure to
provide them with a season o f such
quality and variety.
The 1996-97 Season also marks
the sixth year o f the Company’s suc
cessful Resident Artists program.
This program continues to grow in
strength and reach, drawing talented
young singers from around the U.S.
The Resident Artists program brings
the power o f opera and musical treat
er to schools and community centers
throughout the region, reaching over
60,000 people each season while
providing these young professionals
a valuable training ground.
