The Fugees (Refugee Camp) are hot on the hip hop music Trail. The
group features Wyclef "Clef" Jean (from left), a Haitian-blooded,
rhyme-sayin' guitar hero; Lauryn ~L" Hill, a sweet-sounding African-
American rapstress and soul singer; and Prakazrel “Pras" Michel,
an amazing verbal acrobat, capable o f leaping tail buildings with a
single, hip hop tinged syllable.

music Factory.
I n the space o f four brief years, the
brainchild o f producers/DJs Robert
Cliville’s and David Cole not only
ignited the presence o f streetwise
rhythms on pop radio, it also altered
the creative direction o f the dance
music genre as a whole. For proof, all
one needs to do is examine The Ulti­
mate: Greatest Remixes and discov­
er a body o f work that still sounds
fresh and innovative. More than a
mere singles retrospective, this al­
bum deftly illuminates and chroni­
cles the unique elements that made
C+C Music Factory special -- most
notably Clivilles and C ole’s talent
for concocting concise and instantly
memorable pop hooks that were com­
fortably accessible to a musical land­
scape wherein hip-hop, house, and
even heavy metal were harmonious­
ly interwoven.
Born into public consciousness
during the summer o f 19 9 1, C+C Music
Factory started as a breeding ground
for the budding gifts o f singer Zelma
Davis and rapper Freedom Williams,
as well as a playground o f seasoned
siren Martha Wash. Fueled by jagged
rock guitar licks, a wriggling bassline,
and an anthemic chorus, the No. I
single “Gonna Make You Sweat” be­
came the undisputed soundtrack ofthe
youth culture o f the moment. Before
the year’s close, the album o f the same
name had begun to draw a larger audi­
ence to the act, e ventual ly sel ling more
than 6 million copies worldwide and
becoming the best-selling pop/dance
album of the 90s so far.

ing the smashing “Things That Make
You Go Hmmm...” and the riotous
