“ Before and A fter", is being p ro ­
m oted as a m ovie ab o u t how a single
event can rock a fam ily from its foun­
dation. H ow ever, the family in Bar-
bet S ch ro ed er’s "B efo re and A fter”
act as if they are not related.
M eryl Streep and Liam N eeson
stars as the R yans w hose teenaged
son, Jacob (E dw ard Furlong), sud-
denly disappear after his girlfriend is
brutally m urdered. The Ryans try' to
protect their son in different ways,
and for different reasons. As told by
little sister Judith (Julia W eldon),
"B efo re and A fter" fails to connect
with the audience.
S treep and N eeson are exciting,
lame screenplay the director could
have cast new talent Instead, "B e­
fore and A fter" is overcast.
Casting Streep and Neeson is akin
to wearing a formal gown to Plaid
Pantry.
Streep and N eeson engage in a
pitiful sex scene that should have
rem ained on the cutting room floor.
The only original acting is from
d efen se atto rn ey Panos D em eris
(A lfred M olina) who makes the au­
dience believe that he really w ants to
protect Jacob.
com petent actors. H ow ever, in this
m ovie they do not mix well. For this

It’s been said that w hat does not
kill you only m akes you stronger.

o f popular culture for whom that is
as true as it is for 2Pac. D espite
controversy and conflict, this fiery
young man w hose every act is

has em erged not only with the rage
and pride he w as born with intact

On All E yez On Me, his fourth
solo album , the first on Death Row
Records, 2P ac is m ore than sim ply
revealing the hard reality o f the
world. His recent travails have
also reaw akened him to the hopes
o f a w orld yet to be achieved, yet
to be created for and by those who
have no voice. T oday, 2Pac is a
free man not ju st in body but in
spirit. “ I ju st said w hat I w anted to
say," says 2 Pac o f A11 Eyez On Me,
“and it liberated me. I let go o f the
anger.”
The first double C D in the histo-
ry o frap , All E yezO n M eexploded
out o f 2Pac alm ost im m ediately
after he was released from prison.
A ccording to him, none o f it was
even conceived until that moment.
Out on a T hursday, he was in the
studio that Saturday. By the end o f
the weekend, he already had four
songs com pleted.

O n,” a rem iniscence o f friends lost,
All E yezO n Me once again proves
2Pac to be the m aster o f the rap
ballad.
H is ability to connect with audi­
ences goes beyond his deeply funky
grooves. 2 P ac’s fans see part o f
them selves in him; they understand
him w ithout ju d g in g him. A s2 P a c
says in the title o f another song on
All Eyez On Me, "O nly G od Can
Judge M e.”
The album which first introduced
2Pac as a significant, explosive,
new v o ic e on th e s c e n e w as
2Pacalypse Now ( 1991). A gold-
seller, it reached #13 on the R&B
chart while the singles “ T rapped”
and “ B renda’s G ot A B aby” w ere
both T op 40 R&B hits and the latter
a #3 rap hit.
Yes. all eyes are on 2 P ac—and
what they see is a man who has
done more than survive, though
th at’s been difficult enough. They
see a man who, when challenged,
ju st gets stronger every time.

But fu rlo n g plays Jacob so laid
back that you really do not care if he
is guilty or not. “ Before and A fter"
does not live up to its prom otion.
