Since then, this diamond-in-the-rough has become a cutting edge, multifaced college, a valuable community asset and is recognized nationally as a model for urban universities and for higher education reform. The celebration begins Friday, Feb. 23 with a noon gathering for the PSU communi­ ty, immediate neighbors and friends. PSU President Judith Ramaley w ill give a b rie f speech, cut the anniversary cake and jo in administrators, faculty, students and sta ff in sing “ Happy Anniversary, PSU.” Saturday, Feb. 24, the party opens at 3 p.m. with the Scottish pipe and drum band Clan Macleay and a parade o f 1946 to 1996 Chevrolets moving from PSU through down­ town. Urban League Plans Equality Dinner R onald Daly, president of telecom­ munication* for R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., will be guest speak­ er at the Urban League of Portland’s Equal Opportunity Dinner Feb. 22 a t the Portland Hilton. Daly, whojoined the nation’s largest printer as a proofreader in 1964 and now leads one o f its worldwide divisions, w ill discuss his experiences as an African American who has broken through corporate America’s glass ceiling. U ntil recently, Daly was president o f R.R. Donnelley Norwest in Portland. The theme o f this year’s dinner is “ B u ild ­ ing Community: Education, Employment and Equality.” The program w ill focus on how the Urban League works with others to advance the cause o f equal access and opportun ity through education and employment. The dinner co- chairs are Keith Lovett, senior vice president Ronald Daly o f human resources for Fred Meyer and Dr. Judith Ramaley, president o f Portland State University. Urban League s Equal O p p o rtu n ity Awards w ill be presented three individuals who have advanced the cause o f equal oppor­ tunity: State Rep. Avel Gordly, Self En­ hancement, Inc. President Tony Hopson and Volunteers o f America President/CEO Gerald McFadden. Gordly has been a lifetime champion o f social justice. In the legislature she helped secure passage o f bills to promote fairness in the justice system and is a chief sponsor o f a statewide initiative petition to raise the m in­ imum wage. She is a co-founder o f the A fri­ can American Legislative Issues Roundtable and the Unity Breakfast Committee, two groups which advocate on a variety o f issues for the African American community She gained experience working in local nonprofits, including House ofU m oja, American Friends Service Committee and the Urban League Tony Hopson founded Self Enhancement in Portland in 1981 as a one-week summer ** * camp for 80 high school students. Today, the program serves more than 700 urban youth a year and w ill soon be moving into a new center that is being built in inner north and northeast Portland. Like Gordly, Hopson has worked tireless­ ly to give back to his community - where he was nurtured and came o f age - and help young people reach their potential. Since McFadden moved to Portland in 1992 to lead Volunteers o f America, the local affiliate has expanded its programs serving young families, the frail elderly, and ex- offenders. McFadden has been a leader in building successful partnerships with the Urban League and other nonprofits and in bringing new services to North and Northeast Portland.
