celebrates Black History Month
on its campuses with a wide range
o f activities scheduled throughout
the month o f February.
Film, dance, gospel music and
historical reading are some o f the
events planned at Cascade,
Sylvania and RockCreek campus­
es. A ll events are free o f charge
and open to the public.
The following are some of the
activities at the PCC Cascade
campus, 705 N. Killingsworth:
Feb. 7 - “ Keita,” an African
film from Burkina Faso, 2 p.m.,
Terrell Hall.
Feb. 8 - Flooney’s Theatre Co.
“ The Works o f Langston Hughes,’
12:30 p.m., Cascade Auditorium.
The performance includes a bio­
graphical sketch o f Hughes’ life,
followed by poetry readings and
selections from two plays.
Feb. 9 - “ The Blue Eyes o f
Yonta,” an African film from Guin­
ea-Bissau, 7:30 p.m., Terrell Hall.
Feb. 13 - “ Sojourner Truth,
the first-person narrative, accom­
panied by drums o f Sojourner
Truth’s life and accomplishments,
including her views on slavery,
noon, Terrell Hall, Room 122.
Feb. 14 - “ The Blue Eyes o f
Yonta,” an African film from Guin­
ea-Bissau, 2 p.m., Terrell Hall.
Feb. 16-“ Gitothe Ungrateful,”
an African film from Burundi, 7:30
p.m., Terrell Hall.
Feb. 20 - Abdi Sherif, R &B and
soul music, noon-1 p.m. Cascade
cafeteria.
Feb. 21 - “ G ito the Ungrate­
ful,” an African film from Burundi,
2 p.m., Terrell Hall.
Feb. 23 - Terrence Scott, o ri­
gins and history o f rap music, along
with a musical presentation. Scott,
a local Portlander, made his way to
the top as rapper Cool Nutz. Now
a producer, Scott speaks about rap
and the music business. Terrell
Hall, room 122.
Feb. 23 - “ Hyenas,” African
film from Senegal, 7:30 p.m.,
Terrell Hall.
Feb. 24 - Family Day, Cascade

Feb. 27 - “ High John Da Con­
queror,” folktales woven into an
authentic American plantation-era
musical, 2-3:30p.m., Terrell Hall,

Feb. 28 - “ Can I Speak For You
Brother,” a depiction o f nine black
men who fought for a dignified
place in American society, includ­
ing Martin Luther King Jr., M al­
colm X , and Frederick Douglass,
11:30 a m., Cascade Auditorium.
Feb. 28 - "Hyenas,” an African
film from Senegal, 2 p.m.
The tobacco and alcohol-free
event w ill celebrate black woman­
hood and w ill feature over 30 work­
shops focusing on issues close to the
homes and hearts o f African Am eri­
can women, including career and
business development, relationships,
financial management, health and
spirituality.
“ Our concern is the total wellness
o f black women, mind, body and
spirit,” said Maria Carothers, execu­
tive producer o f the tour.

this year w ill include Houston, Phil­
adelphia, Chicago and Miami.

Portland Focus On
African Films
Portland Community College in
north Portland is hosting the sixth
annual festival o f African Films as
part o f Black History Month.
Film showings, all with English
subtitles, w ill take place Fridays at
7:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 2 p.m.
through February in room 122 o f
Terrell Hall on the PCC Cascade
campus, 705 N. Killingsworth St.
A ll events are free and open to the
public. Parking w ill also be free for
festival audiences.
“ This is the only festival o f its kind
• and scope in the Northwest, with the
focus on A fric a ,,” said Michae
Dembrow, a faculty member at th
campus and one o f the event organiz­
ers.
“ The series has become a bridge
between the African-American com­
munity and the African expatriate
community. It is also a noteworthy
event for people who are interested
in international affairs,” Dembrow
said.
He said this year’s festival was
“ perhaps our strongest program ever.
The six film s are from six different
countries, including two we have not
featured in the past, Guinea-Bissau
and Burundi.
“ W e’ ll have speakers from these
countries as well as handouts and
information about the country where
the tilm s are shown,” Dembrow not­
ed.

education and employment can pro­
mote equality. It is also a chance to
celebrate Black H istory M onth,
which was founded by Carter G.
Woodson in 1926.”

t o residences, in which we ask that on designated days, youfill with bottles
and cans and place on your porch for pickup Umoja appreciates you
support o f the efforts o f these young men. As their business cards read,
