For an Irish Catholic boy like Richard J. Daley, politics was one of the few tickets
to power. Industrious and ambitious, Daley rose through the ranks of an old-style
machine to become a national figure and Chicago's most powerful mayor. But it r
the end, he lost his grip on the city when confronted by the issues of race and the
Vietnam War. The story is profiled in the American Experience: Daley, the Last
Boss, airing on PBS Monday, Jan. 22.
