When Brown wrote down the many childhood stories he remem bered, he and Jack realized that they had a marketable product that could benefit other African American fam ilies and their kids. Brown and Jack each chipped in $5,000 last March to start Jack Brown Enterprises, which publishes chil d ren ’s books with moral themes aimed at blacks. T here’s a great need for African American kids to have books they can id en tify w ith, said P hyllis Fogelman, publisher o f Dial Books for Young Readers in New York Among other things, the company specializes in publishing books aimed at blacks. “ I think you get a sense o f your self as a child and your place in the world by a lot o f things,” she said. "If you’re black and you see only white H is to ry faces, it leaves a very left-out feel ing, particularly in minority chil dren, who come up against preju dice all the time." It s equally important for white children to see African American families leading successful, normal lives, Fogelman said. Brown, vice president o f the company, is the creative arm, writ ing the stories and handling product development. Brow n's wife, Bar bara Tompkins-Brown, is the mar keting director. Brown adopted the pen name "Zachary X King.” He likes the name Zachary and took on the initial X and the surname King in honor o f black leaders Malcolm X and Mar tin Luther King. B o o k F e a tu re s M in is te r F a rra k h a n A new book by historian Adib Rashad, Islam, Black Nationalism & Slavery, A Detailed History, has just been released. In this fascinating study, Mr. Rashad identified the major land marks in the history of Muslims in America, documenting many contri butions o f Africans to Islam, the pres ence o f African Muslims in America before Columbus, and the role Islam played in Muslim slaves surviving the ordeal of bondage. Beginning with the origins o f Islam in Arabia and continuing to the African empires o f Ghana, Mali and Songhai, Mr. Rashad examines the influence the religion had on the peo ples o f the continent and the impact o f slavery on A frican M uslim s brought to the Americas. He offers several biographical sketches ofpre- Civil War Muslim slaves and how Islam was reintroduced into the Un tied States at the turn o f the century . Mr. Rashad describes the rise o f Islamic and Black Power movements in urban areas o f the U.S. and pre sents vivid portraits o f such powerful historical figures as Marcus Garvey, drew Ali, Elijah Muhammad, and Malcolm X. The book also incudes biographical profiles o f current lead ers such as Minister Louis Farra khan, Imam Jamil Al-Amin (H. Rap Brown), Imam W.D. Mohammed, and many others who have contribut ed to the present African-American Islamic consciousness. The chapters on Elijah Muhammad and Louis Far rakhan are particularly revealing, shedding much light on the origins and teachings o f the Nation o f Islam. Instead, what they found were predom inantly wh ite characters who d id n ’t resem ble their kids. The books they found aimed at black children w eren’t much better. One was the story o f Hansel and Gretel - the only difference was that the chil dren were black instead of white. Some books depicted black children stereotypically, with bug eyes, huge lips and messy hair. ” We didn t think what we found was as good as it could be,” Jack said. W hat’s more, “a lot o f the books didn't have moral themes to them,” Brown said. Brown and Jack realized what they were looking forcould be found in the treasure trove o f stories their families told them when they were young boys. Brown has fond memories o f those stories, especially those told . b. I -i.
