SU B M ISS IO N S: Community Calendar information will be given priority if dated two weeks before the event date. Area churches and the Urban League o f Portland are presenting a holiday cer emony this week with a message about the need for compassion in the age of the HIV/ AIDS disease. “A Christmas in My Soul' will be held Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Lutheran InnerCity M inistries,4219N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. at Skidmore Street. The free program will include songs, poetry, candle lighting and words to in crease the com m unity's awareness about the public health issue of HIV/AIDS, espe cially in the African American commu nity. A dessert social with conclude the program. “The theme of the evening is a call to care and compassion," said Rev. Emmett W heatfall, vice chairman of the Urban League of Portland board of directors. “We hope people who attend will learn how they can respond to this health issue with compassion, care and support.” The program will also include com ments by several African American clergy, including Rev. Wheatfall. Re. Denise Bell of Mallory Avenue Christian Church, and Paster Cecil Prescod of Highland United C hurch of Christ. There will be moments of reflection by two families affected by the disease. "During this season of giving, unity is better understood,” said Ameera Saahir, community HIV/AIDS specialist for the Urban League. “This program will present an opportunity for us to share our gifts with each other.” While the program is intended to heighten awareness and action in the Afri can American community, the entire com munity is invited to join in the call for compassion and care, Saahir said. The Urban League recently embarked on new programs to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, including efforts to increase the awareness of health care services avail able, with an emphasis on women of color in north and northeast Portland, and out reach to gay and bisexual African Ameri can men.
